If the box is black then it is a hd box. They are now called SKY+HD boxes and are the standard box sky now install.

So offers of a free HD box, are bogus then, as you get with a standard install anyway.

not bogus, you just have to pay for install.

maybe HD box is the standard issue now.

Standard set-up for Sky+HD and Sky+ box is free for new Sky TV customers joining online. Offer ends 24 June 2010

I'm just wondering if theres a difference between the boxes. Obviously you don't get the HD channels, without subscribing to them.

There is only one type of box now: the Sky+ HD box. Even if you don't want HD, Sky will still install this box.

Advantages are: easy to upgrade to HD in the future, more advanced guide, larger hard drive for recordings. You can also view BBC HD and ITV 1 HD without paying Sky the €15 extra per month.

Spot on. The old Sky+ box is no more. Anyway, as JDxtra said, you can sample HD content on ITV, BBC, and one or two others and then see if you think a HD subscription is for you (assuming you have a HD Ready or Full HD television/display. If you do decide then it's only a phone call to upgrade to HD rather than an installation (€€) as was previously the case.
