Retrofit Wall Ties

    Hi,

I recently had a visit from building control to my new build who brought me up on the fact that my blocklayer didn't double-up the wall ties around the window/door opes. They requested that I remedy this even though the blocks were up at this stage. Has this happened to anyone in the past and if so, what solutions did you use to resolve?

I have approx 200 ties to install. There are a number of remedial wall ties out there but most are either mechanical (@ approx €3 per tie) which require an special tool to fit (@ approx €120). Another option is a resin based tie (@ approx €1.50 per tie) with the resin costing approx €150 total.

Anyone use any other solutions and if so, what was the approximate cost or any other ideas as to how I can remedy this?

    Thanks!

I don't know what deal you had with your blocklayer, but, if they did a substandard job it is up to them to make it right. Nobody contracts or asks for shoddy or unfinished work.

You assume when you take on a blocklayer that, at the very least, they know how to do their job properly.

The expense of making it right should not be an issue and it shouldn't be your problem, imo.

If you do go ahead and retrofit wall ties around window and door openings, make sure you leave space for a caviy closer ie dont have the ties too close to the edge. Depends on how you are closing the cavity but I was happy that my blocklayer advised me to leave the ties in about 3 inches from the window and door openings, I hadnt considered it
