Playing Dunmurray Springs for our Captains days in a couple of weeks .

Just wondering has anybody played it recently ?

How are the greens playing ?

What would your opinion on the course be ??

I'm all ears on this one too - looking to book in there soon for €40, which seems reasonable if the place is good.

    Anyone ?

Im a member: the greens are being lightly hollow tined today, the major hollow tine was 6-8 weeks or so ago so the greens should be as quick if not quicker than they have been recently in a week or so with the coming rain and heat helping the growth. From the forward tee's it should be an enjoyable day as the fairways are generous but off the fairway in places you have tall fescue grass and you will have no other option but to hack out. It is not a particularly long course from the yellow tee's but the protection is in the elevation changes and fast greens so the bombers need to be straight or it will be a long day.
I am always going to be bias as its my home course but I believe its in top notch condition and the addition of the clubhouse makes it a lovely package. It can be a breezy location so again this can be a factor in club selection making the course feel longer than its yardage. Hope this helps? Any other questions just ask

My work society had an outing there last year, I missed it myself, but every one of them said they'd never go back. They complained about losing balls on every hole as the tall fescue was right up to the edge of the fairway and it was unfair.

I know what you're thinking, a society will have a load of hackers in it who'll find any course difficult, but even the low handicappers didn't like it.

Of course it could be lovely this year, I don't know.

It's a while since I played it but I really like it. You need to hit good shots, yes, and it will punish you if not but, personally, I think it's a lovely place. It's very varied, which is not always the case with courses these days.

I love the place too. It is a real challange and a great course for your captains as it will really sort the men from the boys. Position off the tee is very important this time of year and the variety of holes is great.

I love a good challenge , Tighter courses make me really up my game . Sometimes i get complacent on open courses . Nothing like a good challenge on capts day .

Thats what i like to hear , A few of our big hitters are wild off the tee , No point busting a ball 300yds if you stick it 3 holes away ;);)

The feedback is very good , Really looking forward to playing it now , We played the K-Club ( palmer course ) last year for Captains day and i thought it was very overrated .

In fairness its not up to the edge of the fairway and the rough is staggered with 2 cuts before the fescue which is strategically grown throughout the course. If you take the aggressive line your good shot will be rewarded but a weak effort will be penalized. As said earlier good course management will win your captains day. Have a look at the scoring analysis from recent competitions below here and you will get a feel for the course's difficult holes and what score you know will be close to winning your captains day. I have had mares there plenty of times but when I do score well its more often or not been down to good solid finding fairways from the tee's and tidy putting and accepting your handicap and limitations and not chasing the shots that are unlikely to come off

well our captains day was saturday and have to say its a lovely course.our captain decided that the course would be to short off yellows and put us on the whites which made it harder especially with a strong wind aswell .

you defo have to be hitting the ball well and straight to have a good score but the greens are probably the trickiest ive played they were fast and plenty of elevation changes very hard to read.
only five of our members managed to break 30points ,the overall winner had 40 points a bloody bandit who also won last years captains day and hasnt put a decent score in since winning last year:mad:

i quite like the course apart from the stupid dog leg par 5,but if i was booking a society it wouldn't be high on my list, fact is most society's will have a % of average or worse players and the rough is too thick for those slicers/hookers

isn't that tough crap for them though?
why should the rest of us have to deal with drab up-down fairways cause a few members cant be assed getting a lesson and ironing out a hook/slice
    mockery

Have to agree with conno here , I played the course on sat with the same society as Thoscon , It's a good test of anybodies golf , I for one would defo head back there , 2 40's and only 3 30+'s out of 37 players says a lot for the course , we have a decent standard of golfer in the society , i played in a group were our hc's are 11 , 13 and 17 and we all finished with 27pts each ,

In Fairness to the lads we have played , Seapoint , Rathcore , Carton House ( monty course ) , Concra wood , Headfort ( Old ) and now Dunmurry Springs , and Dunmurry is the only course were we struggled as a society to post decent scores ....

I'll defo be going back for one of there weekly singles opens .

your words not mine, nothing wrong with a tough test but over penal rough not suitable for an average society, the other poster said they had played a lot of tough good courses and DS seems to be where they struggled most, point proved
go on give us 1 of your typical smart arsed responces ,don't let us down,u have a rep here to uphold

Thats one of the best society line ups I've seen in a long time, fair dues. Regardless how tough the lads do or do not fine the golf thats a great list of courses.

Said before I really like Dunmurry Springs, I too found the greens very tricky. The CSS is normally low there like 33 or 34 points so would explain the difficulty, still a great course.

To finish out our year , we still have Castleknock , Headfort (new) , Knightsbrook , and possibly luttrelstown for the nov turkey shoot ..

We put a lot of effort in to make it an enjoyable society , 35 + members and they all get a say in where we play . At lot of credit goes to the secretary for Organising the courses ...Isn't that right Thoscon ....lol

Dunmurry is superb , Very tricky greens and every hole is different .

Posting a link to open singles results from today, scores reflect a fair course with a good mix of handicaps involved in the prizes.
