contact lenses and the e111

    hey, does anybody know if contact lenses (hard gas permeable) are covered under the e111 while in the UK?

    I can't give a concrete yes or no, but to be honest, I doubt they are. According to the FAQs for the EHIC (replacement to the e111 since 2004):
    The Card entitles you to necessary healthcare in the public system of any EU / EEA member state or Switzerland if you become ill or injured while on a temporary stay in that country. The Card does not cover the cost of treatment in a private setting.

    The Card does not entitle you to travel abroad with the aim of getting healthcare through the public system.

    I don't think something as specific as hard gas permeable contact lenses would come under the banner of becoming ill or injured, not to mention that it's probably a privately arranged thing.
