at the moment everything it seems is being 'sent to customs' normally just for vat and duty, last few parcels have needed me to email over a paypal receipt more than likely you will get a letter in the post

if you need to send one off it would be to customs directly and not an post, has it been flagged as sent to customs for two weeks? or just two weeks since order?

as others have said, it's most likely for import taxes, you have to pay it on anything valued at over 22Euro including postage. You'll get a letter (usually about 3-4 days after it's sent to customs) asking for the paypal receipt. email it to the address they give with the ref number on the letter and within 24 hours they'll tell you when it'll be delivered and how much you owe.

This is my personal experience with it and occasionally the email i've gotten back has said that there not gonna charge.

Yeah, it's getting silly at this stage. I was under the impression you can import up to €40 worth before being stopped for VAT and duty. I got a package of a vertical fore grip and two packs of rail covers for $46 USD including shipping. It got stopped and all the trouble for €7, yes €7. An Post was put through so much effort on their part that they wanted another €6 for them selves. I know its a tiny amount but considering the price. Having to pay €13 on a €37 package including the shipping costs. Thats a 37% mark up. Importing high end AEGs with an express company its around 25% additional costs.

I think I will starting asking retailers to order in accessories for me now aswell if this trend continues.

I think it just arrived today from the date I ordered it. i just checked the tracking number at anpost then it says there its was sent to customs.

well the letter i got was still quoting 20e as the limit

tbh we have had a great time in the past i remember importing stuff for almost a year without anything getting stopped for customs, know with the internet shopping boom customs are really cracking down on vat and duty across the board

when ever im buy anything im always adding at least 25% from the start if im not happy with the figure then i do not order

It gets really frustrating when your waiting for an item and finding it will be sent to customs. then rip you off with VAT etc...

The Vat is the Vat, it's due on anything coming into the EU. That's not a rip off, that's just the law. Courier companies taking a chunk of the money and adding their processing fees, now that is a rip off...

one think though i got a marpat rav vest from ebay marked clearly as assault vestm, priced at $120 arrived with no problem same with GBB mp5 and mac 11 no issue, have had wii controllers, combat shirt, rifle case and radios stopped so far in the last month or so. its hits and miss but as pudding says if you allow about 25% or so of the cost and its still cheap enough or you can't get anywhere else then go for it

Email your paypal receipt and tracking number to dmc@revenue.ie if you want to speed up receiving your package. Worked for me, skipped waiting for the letter.

I did exactly that and they responded with
Thank you for your email. Customs Charges of €20.00 are due on your package..blah blah
Prob someone having a bad day alright. Its worth a try though. You think they would be happy, save having to post the letter to you.

How will I pay the customs if they hit me with VAT etc...?

    its import duty
If they are coming from a non-EU country you can expect import duties and
charges to be levied. These normally amount to about an extra 25% but
Revenue & Customs can give you a more accurate figure.

if you were selling it on like the retailers do you would have to add another 21% for vat

but as you are importing for own use you just pay the duty

strange as customs clearly label it as vat, from there letter
    The charges consist of:
    - Customs Duty ( Where applicable)
    - 21% Vat and
    - A post office handling fee of 6euro

Its VAT, @ 21%. Anything coming into Ireland from a non-EU country is liable to VAT, if its over a certain value (I cant remember offhand - somewhere in the region of €20 to €40), whether you're an end-user or a distributor/retailer.

Import duty, on the rare occasions its applied to airsoft gear, is only 3% to 5%, depending on the composition of the goods (materials, useage intent etc) and the mood of the customs officer who inspects it - theres a book of literally thousands of categories with different rates for different goods, and airsoft gear can fall into a few different categories, with diiferent rates of duty, or even a zero rate.
