How formal should your cover letter be?

When I was in school we were taught to write very formal cover letters, beginning with "Dear Sir/Madam" and using phrases like "Please find my cv attached for your perusal".

After spending a few years in the working world, I question the use of this. I have never got a job from a formal cover letter, and if I was an employer I would prefer something more straightforward.

I'm applying for a big job at the moment (Google) and I'm writing a cover letter, so I need opinions - cover letters: casual or formal?

I'd keep it formal to be honest as it shows professionalism. It's equally as important to tailor it for each job you're applying for. The approach I take seems to work as I've gotten a few interviews in the past months which is beginning with dear (insert name), saying what I'm currently doing (in my case a masters thesis), saying why I'm attracted to the company in question, stating why I'm suited i.e work experience and showing how my skills match their job requirements, stating that I'm ambitious etc and always ending with "please find my cv attached... yours sincerely Killerkity.

That phrase sounds a bit archaic, however I would try to keep the cover letter professional. The idea is your cv gives the facts while your cover letter expresses your interest in and suitability for the job. It's a tried and tested formula.

Google might be different. Maybe they'd be more impressed with something that stands out or is off the beaten path, but i'd generally play it safe with a formal cover letter.

I'm not sure how you would go about writing an informal cover letter.. "hey buddy, how are things. hope you like my cv. holla back"
