So its Meath V Dublin in the SFC Leinster Semis

After last week Meath really needed to step it up and thats exactly what they did, even being down to 14 men
after 53 mins didnt seem to put them off their stride

Dublin had a terrible first half but showed what they were made of in extra time and did well to beat Wexford

What does everyone think? What teams do you think will be put out?

Meath or Dublin in the Leinster Final??

Bout time Meath picked up another Leinster title :pac:

On the basis of last Sunday one would be inclined to say neither. However, Meath really packed a punch today. They showed that they can come out and give a pounding even under unfavourable conditions.

Depending on Dublin Team and tactics, I would say Meath.

    My Preferred Dublin Team

    Cluxton

    Henry
    R.O'Carroll
    Fitzsimons

    Nolan
    Cullen
    Cahill

    Fennell
    McCauley

    Hubbard
    A.Brogan
    K.Bonner

    E.O'Gara
    C.Keaney
    B.Brogan

I think we are looking at a very tight game here. Dublin were awful last week and they know they have to be better to beat Meath last week. Meath were great in the first half against Laois in Croker but useless the rest of the match, they looked better tonight. Dublin will win by 2 or 3 points.

If the standard from us is the same as last week we are without a hope, if gilroy put his entire leg up the arse of the team we might pull it outta the bag

Looking at het fields team there the only change i would make would be to switch alan brogan with o gara, if he doesnt do much then put mossy in

Depends on what Dublin can produce on the day. If they can start like they finished last week and also get selection right from the start i'd expect they'll win. If they don't, Meath won't be as generous as Wexford were and will run out comfortable winners.

Would it be wrong to say Meath are favourites for this?

Meath wont be favourites but they wont be complete outsiders. Dublin will be very close favourites.

I think it will all depend on whether the new Dublin full back line can hold the Meath full forward line. If they can, Dublin will win. I can see this going to extra time also.

    Dublin to edge it.

Meath forwards could do some serious damage, though, if the Dubs that we saw first half against Wexford turn up...

i really think that dublin team will not be that bad again.thats my biggest fear we go up there and they have a massive back lash waiting for us

I wouldn't change the full back line, one of the very few promising things about last week

I'd have Henry in the half backs and Cullen looks to be the only option at CHB despite his lack of pace the last day.Nolan does deserve a more prominent role on this team though.

Totally agree with you in midfield,McConnell is a passenger on this team whatever position he plays.

There's no way in a million years i'd have Bonner on the panel let alone first team. The man contributes nothing.Once again glaringly obvious in the starts he got in the league.Shocking lack of talent at this level.Flynn gets the nod here in my opinion, the guy works his socks off and is effective.I'd also have Quinn in ahead of Hubbard. We need someone to slot over frees and 45's,too many were badly missed the last day and could prove costly in a tight game with Meath.

I wouldn't be too upset with O'Gara getting a start but i would be worried about him picking up a card or two...quite clumsy at times.I'd have Andrews in ahead of him, like Nolan he's too much of a talent to be warming the bench.

I still think we (Meath) dont have a good enough team to beat Dublin.

Dublin got their wake up call against Wexford, had they had a handy game against Wexford I think Meath might have a chance.

But since Dublin got that scare, they will be much better prepared for Meath, should have problems and issues sorted out and will be too good for the current Meath squad.

A dublin meath game is always a great day out especially in croker but id say both teams will step their games up for this one. Dublin need to be very careful with getting cards especially fennel and in my opinion bonner should not be anywhere near croke park on sunday

you should have, on paper meath look the better team. meath are most physical imposing team in ireland at present, its more like a nfl team than a gaa team at the minute :D what they do lack is pace and thats where dublin will damage them and win imo

Exactly, the lack of pace will kill us.

I can see Meath winning this one. If they can win enough ball around the middle their potent forward line could do damage. Dublin were woeful against Wexford, and you can't just wave a magic wand and fix all those problems in a couple of weeks. I know Dublin finally went up a gear in extra time, but for a long time in that game they were desperately poor, against a Wexford team who are no world-beaters themselves. It's possible that the sight of Meath jerseys will spark a better response from the Dubs, but I'm not convinced that they're actually good enough. This might be the worst Dublin team in a long time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,742 ✭✭✭blackbelt

I'd like to think that Dublin will improve their game after such a scare but I feel this time around we are lacking the experience in important sectors of the pitch unless Gilroy has an epiphany over night and strings a very good team together.

As for Meath,I think their win came at a great cost with the injuries and suspensions. No Crawford,O Rourke.Harrington carrying a knock and Burke is out injured.

I'm not too concerned about our full back line.I think O Carroll has the measure of Sheridan.Midfield is my primary concern. We need a strong midfield to supply our full forward line with some high ball.Darren Magee may be worth a starting 15 place alongside Fennell and leave McAulay in the half forwards.I think switching Henry to the other half back position is needed leaving Flynn to occupy wing forward.Mossy in at number 15 and Bernard at full forward with Keaney in the other corner.

I think O Gara is worth another look at.He certainly looks for the ball and shows up well for it.

I think its Meath best chance of beating Dublin since 2001 but you'd have to fancy Dublin in a tight match.Whoever gets a good start should see themselves over the line and I think Dublin are well more reknowned for this.

There are varying rumours going around about Crawfords injury. I've heard that he could be out for the season and on the other hand I've heard he could actually make the game on Sunday.
O' Rourke is not a huge loss as Brendan Murphy is a more than capable replacement. Midfield, however, will be crucial for Meath as Murphy's kickouts aren't as long as O' Rourke's. Seamus Kenny performed admirably in Mickey Burkes place so hopefully he's chosen there. Didn't hear anything about Harrington getting a knock.

I think the game will be won by whichever defence can manage the opposition's attack. I'm always terrified at the prospect of facing the Brogans as they really seem to have a stormer against us but with Kevin Reilly back, hopefully we can contain them. Cian Ward will have to be bang on with his frees as well. He seems to have a habit of freezing when he's up against the Hill.

Can't wait for it. Hope it's a better game than last year and hopefully there's no more refereeing "mistakes" going in favour of the Dubs ;)

Very good keeper, spent some time at Bradford FC and AFC Wimbledon. We'll miss O' Rourkes kick outs though. Also heard from a lad who normally has it right that Crawford will not play again this year, hopefully he's wrong. Agree Kenny should start at half back. I think we have the better forwards but lack of pace right throughout the team will probably cost us in the end.

Meath missing their keeper ( who has a great kick out btw ) will find it alot harder against the dubs but I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see ET and a replay!

That was something else alright. Been lucky enough to see Meath win four All Irelands and to be honest none of them can touch the moment when Foley put the ball in the net. Hairs standing on the back of the neck every time I think of it. No-one from Meath left Croker for about half an hour after the final whistle. Just stood there stunned, hardly believing that what we just saw had actually happened. One of the best days (and months) of my life.

Although I wouldn't mind if Caoimhin King takes after Meath's no. 7 from back then :D

Is Dublin / Meath the first match of the double header and is starting at 4. If so, which Dublin and Meath fan is going to wait and watch the Louth / Westmeath game after.

Yes Louth - Westmeath throw in is 5:50. And not many Meath and Dublin supporters will stay around imo. Could actually be a bit weird having a game starting while thousands of people are leaving.

think ill stay for the first half to let the traffic and crowd disperse a wee bit actually

To be honest Mark Ward, Mickey Burke and Paddy O'Rourke aren't that big a loss to the Meath starting line up. Meath started winning a lot more breaking ball once Seamus Kenny was moved to the half backs against Laois, Mark Ward shouldn't be near the starting line up anyway and Brendan Murphy is just as good a keeper if not better than O'Rourke.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15,238 ✭✭✭✭Diabhal Beag

This will hopefully be a good match. Dublin were lucky to be let back into the match by a tired Wexford team. I still think they will beat Meath by 3 points.

I agree about Ward and somewhat agree about O' Rourke, but Burke has improved hugely this year and will be missed. Hopefully Kenny will replace him in that position and I'd love to see Ollie Lewis take Seamus' place in the half forward line as he impressed me in the O' Byrne Cup in January and looked good when he came on in Tullamore at the weekend.

As for staying for the Louth/Westmeath match, I usually do stay for both matches of a double header in Croke Park. Must decide who to cheer on in that one, not easy for a Meath man to get behind either team. :p

If Meath somehow manage to beat Dublin then you have to shout for Louth, only cos hammering them in the final would be so much fun :D

So it would. Westmeath are much bigger rivals to us than the Wee ones aswell. But if we happen to lose, I wouldn't begrudge a Westmeath victory over the Dubs.

as a Louth man I really hope Meath win and we do aswell because by god we owe them a beating for them two late goals in navan

Meath (SFC v Dublin) - Brendan Murphy, Chris O'Connor, Kevin Reilly, Eoghan Harrington, Anthony Moyles, Gary O'Brien, Caomhin King, Brian Meade, Mark Ward, Seamus Kenny, Joe Sheridan, Graham Reilly, Cian Ward, Shane O'Rourke, Stephen Bray.

    Dublin (SF v Meath): S Cluxton; M Fitzsimons, R O'Carroll, P McMahon; G Brennan, B Cullen, B Cahill; E Fennell, R McConnell; P Flynn, A Brogan, N Corkery; C Keaney, B Brogan, T Quinn.

Was hoping that Gillespie would get the nod in midfield over Ward but hopefully Mark will prove everyone wrong. Also Crawford is said to be fit enough for a place on the bench.
Have to say it's a pretty terrifying Dublin forward line. Kevin Reilly and Gary O' Brien are going to have to have the game of their lives or the Brogans will destroy us again. Having said that, I'd be confident that our forward line will have the edge over the Dublin defence. Hopefully Joe and Shane can have a field day in the full forward line.
