I really don't know, but it might be better if you gave some more details? Model, make, year, engine?

nissan almera 98 hb 1.4, takes a few trys to get it started in neutral but starts first time in 2nd also the petrol gauge isnt working

I take it you're starting in with the clutch in in both cases? If you were trying with the clutch in in 2nd but with the clutch out in neutral then I could imagine that there'd be more drag with the clutch out, but otherwise I can't see what difference it would make.

Yea I had a volvo 345 once that would only start if the drivers door was open .
