    Hi guys,

So like I said on another thread I'm looking to build a HTPC for my family but I'm not sure of the parts. It would preferably be done quite cheap but not at the expense of too much quality. Less then €800 anyway.

    It would be used for.

Recording tv (we're with ntl digital).
    Watching DVD's (blueray)
    Ripping DVD's (blueray)
    Surfing (we're wireless)
    Programming a tv recording schedule.

Probably a few other things I can't think of right now. I don't care who we buy them off either.

We're buying a new tv and speakers so if you want to give some input on that go ahead.

Any help would be very appreciated.

    Pat

I'm not aware of any way to watch NTL digital on a HTPC. It's an encrypted service and it requires the use of your NTL card to view it. While other pay TV services like SKY can be got on a HTPC through means which can't be discussed on this forum I don't think the same methods will work with NTL. Even if it can be done it's very difficult to do so.

If you want TV on your PC your best option is to get a satellite dish installed. You can get Free To Air satellite TV via a DVB-S or a DVB-S2 card. You can get BBC-HD and ITV1-HD if you use a DVB-S card, but the signal type they are currently being broadcast in may be changing so if that happens you'll need a DVB-S2 card. For more info on Free to Air Satellite channels check out www.freesat.co.uk, it will give you an idea of what is available.

If you want RTE it can be only got Free To Air using an aerial. RTE Digital Terrestrial service is due to launch in October you'll need a DVB-T card to receive it. Currently there are RTENL digital terrestrial trials ongoing around the country which transmit RTE 1, RTE 2, TG-4 & RTE News Now along with some test card channels and radio channels.

As mentioned in his other thread, you use a TV card with composite inputs and take the output from the NTL set top box.
