I am in the market for a new laptop to use mainly for gaming. I am very tempted by the Alienware M17x but was wondering if anyone knew of a comparable system but maybe without the €3500 price tag :)

M17x offers single or crossfire 5870.

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-5870.23073.0.html

Just look at the high-end graphics cards - ATI 5870, ATI 5850, Nvidia GTX280M etc. Down the bottom of the page for each GPU, you can see laptops available with each card.

So you're pretty much looking at stuff like the Clevo W870CU/W860CU (see Kobaltcomputers), Asus G73JH, MSI GX740, etc

However, from that list it looks the M17x is the only one with crossfire 5870s on the market. Everything else just has a single card.

Unfortunately that High Performance Gaming grade laptop comes standard with that price tag. If you want the performance but not the price, your best bet is to explore using a desktop; a laptop should really be best considered only when you expect to do a lot of hopping around place to place.

Yup, at that price range, you could be a top spec desktop and a very nice laptop, If that's a runner i'd definitely go that route.

thanks for the replies guys, I did think about the desktop route but as I am only at home for about 5 weeks a year the laptop is going to be better for me

Does anybody have any good mid-range gaming laptop recommendations? I am looking to buy a laptop for lans and such. What should I go for? Acers seem to be decent and somewhat gaming oriented. I have about 800/900 to drop on one, I guess I'll check out reviews in the meantime.

    What is your budget? E1500? E2000? E2500?

OP: you should give a look at the Asus range-the G73JH is going for €2K on elara, a lot more value than a comparable Alienware. I'm sure if you shopped about you would get better value.

Looks are a matter of taste but by all accounts a powerful & well built machine. I would avoid Clevo based gear like the plague-had nothing but trouble (thank you Rock ).

My budget can stretch to the €3500 alienware, but ideally sub €3k would be nice

paying that much for a laptop is pure insanity, the wise man would buy a used gaming rig

You could of course also build or buy an HTPC rig and put some decent parts in it. The result is something relatively portable compared to a full tower, with adequate performance.

when youre not at home where are you? Is it for college or are you a traveling salesman, etc.

When I'm not at home,I am the skipper of a yacht, so I end up all over the world - hence the laptop over a desktop :)

If you really want the Alienware M17x, they are available for well under your budget. For example, see their current offers here
This has an i7 processor, 4GB RAM and a single 5870.
If you apply the EPP discount (by going through www.dell.ie/epp) this comes in at 2100 delivered. Bumping the processor up to an i7-820QM and opting for crossfired 5870's brings the price up to 2770.
Kobalt Computers UK are also worth a look so you can compare prices & specs.
