Problems connecting a 2TB hard drive to my PS3

I bought a 2TB external hard drive at christmas so that I would have a back up for all my files that were stored on my Media Player (which I have had for the last 3 years). The media player (which always worked on my PS3) died on me this week so I connected the 2Tb hard drive to my PS3 but the HD is not been recognised.

Any ideas as to how I can get the PS3 to recognise the hard drive? I have about 500 movies on it (100 of which I have yet to watch) so I really dont want to lose them.

    Thanks

First off is it in the FAT32 format?

Second is it set up with the correct folder names?

The PS3 is fairly picky how it reads stuff. Here shows how to set up the folders correctly.

Can you see the hard drive at all? Say when you scroll to music/ videos? Does it show up but there are just no folders available in it?

Im not sure if the drive is in the FAT32 format. I usually just plug the media drive (or USB flash drives in) and they work straight away. I can check when I get home. I have a Windows XP Laptop.

The folders on the 2TB Hard drive are set up with various names (e.g I have a folder for each season of Dexter/24/Heroes as well as a folder for Movies (that has 5 sub folders).

The PS3 is not recognising the drive at all. I dont get the option to select the triangle.

I can guarantee if its a 2TB drive, it not formatted as FAT32.

You will have to move everything off the drive, format it using FAT32format and then transfer it all bck again.
One thing to be aware of is that FAT32 has a 4GB file size limit so anything over that won't transfer.

be warned if you're formatting the drive with vista or win 7 it will not format it correctly. you'll need to download a free tool that will format it in native fat 32. I spent days trying tow ork it out...

The biggest single file I have is a 1.5GB one. Looks like I will have to get a new HD so if I have to transfer all the files from the 2TB. Half of it is used up with tv/movies and music. I bought the 2TB as a back up for my media player. Now I will have to get a back up for the back up.
Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.

k this seems like a good place to ask this. Is there any way to back-up all my game saves without having to do them all individually? What will the back-up utility aqctually back-up? Thanks

I'm pretty sure you can just copy them to a usb key, some are copy protected tho.....

    1. On the XMB (cross media bar), go to the Game section.
    2. Go to Game Saves
    3. Put in your memory stick (cf, ms duo, sd)
    4. Find the game save you want to copy/backup, highlight it and hit the Triangle button.
    5. Choose the menu option to Copy
    6. Hit the X button on the memory stick and let it copy.

The only quicker way would be a complete back up. Not sure if you can pick what you want to back up.
