3DS - Info and rumours

Couldn't find a thread about the 3DS console specifically, so I thought I'd throw one up.

Found this story which would be a sweet if true.

It seems that you can install games onto the 3DS, hopefully this is true.
The suggestion arrives from the cold and sober pages of a Japanese business newspaper, which isn't likely to have made the story up for larks (although it is more possible it got confused over a technical point).

Either way it claims that you'll be able to install 3DS games from a cartridge onto either the onboard memory or a SD memory card. Since Nintendo hasn't indicated how much onboard memory the 3DS has it's unclear how many titles will be able to be stored.

According to the paper though 'multiple games' can be installed and you can switch between them at will without having to cart around all the, err… carts.

Although it is possible to install games on the Xbox 360, PSP and, in part at least, the PlayStation 3 this is solely to increase loading time speeds over running it from a disc. Since the 3DS doesn't have this problem the option seems to be one simply of convenience.

It does sound like an invitation to piracy though, which makes it seem a very un-Nintendo sort of feature. It could also mean an end to the Nintendo DS's region free status, which has already been eroded via DSiWare.

Nintendo has yet to confirm or deny any of the paper's report, or indeed say anything about the 3DS's internal memory, menu or online services. The company does have a habit of not revealing all of a console's features until quite late in the day though, so our guess is that this is all substantially true.

Why would you want it to be true though?

The system is fine the way it is, I just worry about them destroying the second-hand market.

as the article says the DS doesn't have loading times and I really don't see nintendo changing their way of gaming just because you " don't have to carry the carts around"

As long as this is cracked within weeks like the DS, we'll all have 'multiple installs' ;)

The Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D – Naked Sample tech demo running on the Nintendo 3DS at E3, as we speak, is just that: a tech demo to show off the device’s stereoscopic abilities. Does this mean we’ll never see an actual Metal Gear game on the 3DS?

Not quite, according to Kojima Productions.

In a live stream where series director Hideo Kojima and other members of Konami answered fan questions, they replied in answer to that very question: “We’re going to see what people think and feel. What [Kojima] is going to do, is decide the right direction. This was more of a 3D depth presentation. The real game won’t be like that. Your eyes get tired.”

So a Metal Gear on 3DS isn’t quite confirmed just yet, but it isn’t off the table either

So it's not confirmed at all for ds. Maybe another project?
    it still looks great though

The graphics chip for it has been announced - it's a four year old chip but still powerful for a portable machine.
