All but ended (dashed, finished hopes, etc.) It just doesn't make sense

    So you read or hear the news, which I just did, in reading form on rte.ie that Mexico have "all but ended" Frances hopes.... so on....

    Seriously, what else did they do? Like did they have a salsa dance, caress, massage or bloody hold hands with France? all but ended, I would have said something along the lines of Mexico have surely ended hopes.... This term is used all the time and it doesn't seem to make sense, or am I missing something?

    It's the "but" bit that just seems to render this meaningless or stupid more so!
