Kitchen makeover advice needed

We inherited a pretty nice kitchen when we bought our present home some years back. However, it is looking a little tired now and we'd like to spruce it up a bit. The doors on the fitted presses seem to be solid wood, although I don't know what type.

I am thinking of painting or staining the doors and changing the handles. We were thinking of an off-white or ivory finish.

Has anyone done anything like this and if so how did it turn out?

Hi,

By looking at the pictures you posted the kitchen doors are oak mdf veneer. But you can still paint them.
