Forgive me for being nosey but aren't you just starting out on C25k? there is no need to be taking these unless you are doing some serious long distance stuff (15 mile+ runs). Otherwise they are just sugarry bars and awful for your teeth and health.

Wash your teeth twice a day, use mouthwash and your teeth will be fine. AS for diet if your fire is hot enough it will burn anything. That is not to say one should eat fatty foods such as pizzas and frozen meals.

I get what your saying woodchopper but from being a regular poster/lurker on the Nutrition & Diet Forum I know that the OP is trying to lose weight and is just starting up on the couch to 5 k programme. Therefore there is absolutely no need for him to be taking Power Bars.

    +1 on what menoscemo said

No need to be taking gels/bars unless out for running for around 1:45+, water on the other hand is personal choice.

Many dilligent athletes drink energy drinks on long runs ie power bar etc not just water. If an athlete is running over an hour they should have a bottle of water with them. No need for gels or bars although one may get hungry if so a box of jaffa cakes could be stored somewhere.

If someone runs in order to lose weight, that would be a bad idea!

Eh - I do 2:30-3:30 runs at between 4:15 and 4:30 a km and I never use energy drinks. Or water for that matter.

I do take a gel every 30 minutes after 1:30 though.

At what stage would you start to take water? Have you though about how you would fule for a marathon?

In Irish conditions - probably wouldn't take water, maybe a few swigs if some handed me a bottle.

Fuel for a marathon? A Sis go gel every 20 minutes after an hour.

Fairplay i woudnt go through much H2O on long runs but would go through a couple of small bottle mostly just swigs too.

How does running compare to the bike for water?

The temperature reached 29 degrees three Sundays ago. Would you take a drink in these conditions given that you are running 30 miles or just carry on regardless.

In those conditions I would stash a bottle alright.

Normal irish conditions I should have said!

    That's a hell of a lot of gels for a marathon. So 1:00, 1:20, 1:40, 2:00, 2:20, 2:40? I'd take on every 6-8 miles, for a around 3 or 4 in total. SIS Isotonic gels. Is this for a marathon after a swim/cycle?

I tend to run a little rich on CHO so I'd pop 6 for a marathon.

One the one hand we have Mick Rice who eats one banana before a marathon and that's it and Tunney at the other end with stomach churning amounts of CHO. I don't think we had 6 gels in the 15 marathons last month!

Go gels are only low on calories, equivalent of 4 powerbar gels.

Depends on the intensity you are running and and the ratio of Fat:CHO you will burn at that intensity.

I'd venture a guess that the 15 marathons were at low intensity as opposed to just under LT2.

Does it not make sense to take as many gels as you can stomach .. so to speak?

i think there is only so much CHO you can absorb in a given time - so whilst you may physically be able to hold on to them, will they be bio-available?

Thanks for the advice, I'll give the Powerbars a miss for the time being.

Long shot, but does anyone know what brand power bars taste like the "Desperate Dan" bars that you used to be able to buy? Guess it's like a tangy orange taste for anyone who doesn't remember them.

Just in case anyone else was wondering, I've found out that the brand is simply called "Power Bars" and I'm going to pick some up tomorrow.
