Is it legal to say whatever you want about whoever you want on Boards.ie?

I have just been through some name calling on another thread here on boards.ie and am wondering what the legal implications are if you are offended by people posting remarks as they see fit without caring if others are offended?

    Anyone want to comment?

    Just a passenger

No you can't say what you like about whoever you like... Why would this be any differant to any other form of medium?

A person who is simply offended has no cause of action at civil law.

A person who is defamed can sue the publisher(s) of the defamatory comment.

I suggest reporting it to the mods rather than starting an off-topic fight on the thread.

Other than that, what Reloc8 said.

    That's my sole comment.

I think it really depends on whats being said. If I want to say that person X (sorry Mr X) was a gobsh*te then that my opinion and why shouldn't I be allowed express my view?

Depends on what you mean by "name calling", Any post on boards.ie would be subject to relevant libel/slander (blasphemy if relevant) laws.

Also even if no laws are broken, the mods could delete posts them deem to be "offensive"...

I thought boards could only be held liable if they allowed the post to remain after it had been moderated.
