buying a second hand car in the next week or so. Had initially thought about buying a 07 corolla (1.4 petrol saloon) but spoke to a local mechanic who said not to go near them. He said the newer ones are being made in England and that Rover parts are being put into them. Have no idea whether or not this is true but it has kind of put me off buying one.

So am now thinking of buying a 08 Hyundai i30 1.4 petrol. Havent really heard much about how reliable etc they are. Anyone know how they are?

Same car as a Kia Ceed really. My sister has a Ceed and it's completely inoffensive, does most things well, good spec and has a decent warranty. Also, for a 1.4 it's peppy enough and economical. i30 has the nicer interior or the two by a long way.

If you were thinking about a Corolla this will be right up your street.

Your mechanic is tell porkies in that the Corolla is made in Turkey and I've never heard of them using Rover parts.

If you are planning to keep the car for a good few years then look at the i30's sister car the Kia Ceed, it comes with a 7 year warranty from new. Just be aware that you have to get it serviced at a Kia garage as condition of the long warranty.
