    Patrol ship on diplomatic mission
    Sunday Independent
    Sunday May 02 2010

One of the country's top Naval Service patrol ships will set sail on Monday on a 10-week trade and diplomatic mission to Latin America.

The 47-strong crew of the LE Niamh will embark on an extensive programme of charity work, meetings and marketing events designed to strengthen links and promote Ireland.

The visit will see the vessel dock in Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Veracruz on the Mexican Gulf coast before its final stop in Miami.

The first port of call will be Rio de Janeiro in Brazil on May 15, where the ship's company will be using their technical expertise and considerable muscle to help build a new centre for disadvantaged children. The crew will also be bringing toys, clothes and books donated to support the Irish Government-sponsored project.

Just over a week later, the 78m-long ship will dock in the Argentinian capital Buenos Aires. The trip, coinciding with the bicentennial of the country's independence from Spain, will see the LE Niamh take pride of place in a special celebratory flotilla.

"There's the diplomatic role, the humanitarian role, the economic role and the chance to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Latin American independence," Naval Service Lieutenant Commander Terry Ward said.

"We're recognising the many Irish people involved in that achievement including Admiral William Brown, the father of the Argentine Navy."

After stopping at the Chilean ports of Punta Arenas and Valparaiso the boat will become the first Irish vessel to transit the Panama Canal. The LE Niamh will then will sail to Veracruz for a series of meetings and events to encourage trade.

The ship will leave its final destination Miami after taking part in the US independence celebrations on July 4.

Commissioned almost a decade ago, the LE Niamh is the newest vessel in the Irish Naval Service fleet. In 2002 the ship undertook another trade mission to Asia in conjunction with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Enterprise Ireland.
