    Hi

I am an Acca finalist working in industry for last 4 years. I am wondering if there are any opportunities to make extra money by doing nixers for small businesses ie tax returns etc.

As I have no experince in practice I'm wondering would anyone know what the starting point would be.

    Thanks in advance

Only thing I can suggest is putting up an ad for bookkepper to bring accounts to trial balance stage, Vat returns etc.

In my experience people are reluctant to just respond to ads like that, word of mouth is the best form of advertising.

Keep an eye on jobsites as often there are part time opportunities for bookkeepers with flexible hours i.e evenings and weekends.

    Good luck.

Offering to prepare accounts and tax returns is a form of public practice that could get you disclipined by ACCA, as you do not hold a practicing cert.

certainly book-keeping of a limited company (where the accounts are then prepared by a practicing accountant) or being an employee of any "clients" you have could get around that, but then you could be subject to the working time directive (or rather your full-time employers would be).

Be careful on the type of work you take on as already mentioned.

The best way to get work is through word of mouth. People need some reliable and who has references. If you make a mess it could be very costly.

    You could try:

    Gumtree.ie
    Gleemo.ie
    or Adverts.ie

you are an ACCA accountant, that should mean you've done the ethics part.
doing nixers, cash in hand with no tax paid and working for someone other than your employer kind of goes against that don't you think?

To be fair the OP did not say that he/she wanted to earn cash in hand or untaxed income.
He/She simply asked if it was possible to earn EXTRA income after hours.
To which of course the answer is yes.

nixer implies cash in hand, untaxed by it definition.

That said the banks and other companies have constantly proved that all the ethics stuff is useless and not followed anyway so off you go with it

Regardless of what the term may imply, the op asked how to make money doing small jobs. We have no reason to suspect he will not declare it for tax purposes.

There is a website called nixers.ie which is basically a jobs website and does not set out to help people evade tax.

I don't remember saying I was going to avoid tax go against Acca guidlines etc

Thanks to all the helpful replies

Please open your eyes - I presumed everyone knew the whole 'ethics' thing was just so you could say you have ticked the box per say to keep the regulators cheerful :)

small businesses is the way to go, I know a woman who is doing it for a local shopkeeper, just comes in once a week and gets the paperwork, does the actual work from home. Everyone wins, and nowadays you're right too to be looking for something. ;)
