    Hi all,

Quick question, leaving for a flight in a few hours to South Africa. I've got a bulb (called an "air purifying bulb". Don't ask, I dont know what its for either ) which a friend over there asked me to buy and bring out to them as they can't get it in SA.

Its a long bulb (about a foot in length) surrounded in a plastic casing. My question is will I be allowed to bring it in my hand luggage? It's in a cardboard box so is safe enough, but I'd still be afraid of it breaking in my main luggage.

    What do you guys think?

Not sure, but make sure you bring the receipt with you. Certain bulbs are coated with an inert fine powder inside, and it's possible that something like that could be used by the wrong person to smuggle drugs.

The following is Dublin Airport's guidelines:

    Hand Luggage

The following items must not be packed in your hand luggage. They must be placed in your hold baggage. If these items are discovered by security officials in your check in luggage you will be requested to surrender the items for disposal:
    • Scissors (except where both blades are round-ended or less than three centimetres).
    • Razor blades (razors that have the blade set into a plastic moulding are allowed, but razors that can be opened and the razor blade removed are prohibited).
    • Knives with blades of any length.
    • Household cutlery (spoons are permitted).
    • Hypodermic needles (unless required for medical reasons, for which proof will be required).
    • Tools (including multi-tools and penknives).
    • Catapults.
    • Corkscrews.
    • Walking/hiking poles.
    • Toy/replica guns (metal or plastic).
    • Sporting bats, tennis rackets.
    • Darts.
    • Billiard, snooker or pool cues.
    You should be ok

Dammit, I can't even get my drug smuggling plans past boardsies, what hope have I against airport security :D

Cool thanks for that. I have the receipt so I'll make sure to bring it as well. I might ask at the check-in desk as well and see what they think. Don't want it confiscated at the security checkpoint but don't want it to break in my bag either.

    Not everything is listed.

Certain stuff cannot be carried in main cabin if it is pressurised - i.e. inflated soccer balls, balloons etc - the pressure will cause them to explode.

Not sure if that applies to OPS bulb or not??

Don't forget you will will have to pass through customs somewhere else too (presume Heathrow) and they could be stricter than Dublin.

Guess just carry on, put it well within the luggage and hope for the best.

I'm flying via Paris, so they prob will be a little stricter. I'll see if I can ask one of the security people before I check in my main luggage so I can always put it in there if needs be.

If not then I'll put it in carry on and chance it. I've accidently brought scissors and the like in my carry-on and not been caught before so here's to hoping!

    Thanks guys.

    Just thought I'd update you..

Got it through no hassle at all. Now just to find out what the hell an "air purifying bulb" is. Wacko medicine methinks but I'll see what my friend has to say for herself ;)

    Cheers guys.
