    Hey

We're currently recording an EP - style-wise it's a mix of indie / powerpop / folk. Here we are:
    www.myspace.com/thecrayonset

We're recording it ourselves and not looking for a producer – we know how we want it to sound.
Any recommendations on who to use to mix it??
    Why do you recommend them??
Any links to songs they’ve mixed??
    Idea of cost?
Has anyone used someone abroad and sent them the files etc? Has this worked out – or do you really need to be there??

    Any advice really appreciated!

Mixing isn't a process dislocated from Production.

A 'sub-optimally' played or arranged song isn't very 'mixable'.

For example on 'I wanted you' the piano is clearly not playing in time with the drums. Similarly the tuning on 'Drifting' isn't accurate to my ears.

Of course these elements could be artistic choices on your part.

If you want to 'do it yourself' perhaps an Executive Producer is what's needed ?
Someone to advise in a general sense ?

There's lots of talent in Mixing Talent in Ireland. The raw material is the biggest factor in a good mix though.

In the losest sense of the phrase "You cant polish a turd".. You could have the best mixer in the world, but if the production on the raw track is not up to scratch then there is not much a mixer will be able to do..

If you would like please listen to our stuff and I can put you in contact with the engineer who mixed it (if you are in to it, im not trying to say he's the best mixer in the country) he works out of Apollo.

Hi. thanks for the feedback - appreciated. Iphoenix - will check out your stuff - I think your producer already pm'd - you guys are quick.

To clarify the songs on the myspace are demos (of varying quality) - None are what we're asking to be mixed. So I'm not looking to get any turds polished - or to pay for the privilege..

Like I said I'm really just looking for people who you'd recommend, prices, links to songs they've mixed etc. If we had cash yes we'd do things differently - look to bring in a producer (maybe brian eno / john cale / steve albini) , record in a flash studio with a bar / jacuzzi etc. Hopefully for the next one..
    Cheers again

Our very own Tweeky is the best mixer in the country.

Our guy doesnt use boards, it might be someone else who has recorded us. If you want our guys contacts PM me and ill send them on..

On a side note, you would be suprised how cheap it is to record with albini in his residential studio..

    Thanks all

Any other recommendations as to who is good?? - ideally from bands as oppossed to those who work actually as mixers themselves (although I do appreciate you guys have bills to pay..)

    Cheers

    Rocky

Can you think of any contemporaries that you like the sound of? Or give an indication as to what you want it to sound like?

you'd be better off asking in a musicians/bands forum if you want recommendations. the majority using this perticular forum are producers/engineers/home recordists.

You can indeed polish a turd. Just pop it in the freezer first.
Much of my recent work has moved towards the end game. i.e. Mixing and Mastering. People send their files, it's all very compatible these days.
With respect to Paul and Tweeky I am the best mixer on the planet. LOL

While there is little doubt Tweeky and Tim are World Class, where are the young guns ?

    Any names there ?

I heard an Ollie Cole single that I thought sounded good done by Ciaran Bradshaw .

I hear that young TelePaul utilises a subtle blend of poor technique and poor technique.

Aye I like the sound of the Ollie Cole album - partially tracked in Joe's if I am not mistaken. Ciaran also did some nice work on the Dark Room Notes stuff.

    Really?!

That's mad considering some of the work he's done...

    (secretly referencing Charlie Winston)

...oh yeah and some upstart named David Bowie

I guess a great recording doesn't rely on one guy - he was efficient and workmanlike and a nice chap.

I'll give a shout out to Philip Begley, did a great job on my bands EP. Good equipment, good ears. That's all you need really.

I tried mixing it myself before hand, the difference between my mixes and his were like night and day. the end of this track has about 40 channels going, all very confusing...
