Cork drivers!

Could someone from Cork like myself, except with more driving experience, explain to me the reasoning behind the the Dunkettle Roundabout on the way to Tivoli? I have had more trouble with that roundabout then a three lane one! It makes absolutely no sense, and the amount of times I've seen close calls is ridiculous!

I was on my way to Collins yesterday, and slowed down coming up to it. Was in the right hand lane to go down the back way to Glanmire. Indicator on, the whole schebang. Move off anyway, and start going around, get to the point where I past the Tivoli turn, start moving over, then I had to slap on the brakes because some guy in the left lane for Tivoli only followed me around.

Would the County Council not put up signs at least stating; "Yes, the roundabout is bad. Left lane for straight on only. Right lane for Glanmire, or if you left the missus in Midleton."??????

    Thanks in advance.

It's a well known fact that people can't use roundabouts. Take nothing for granted. People drift across lanes, use wrong lanes and generally have no idea what they're doing...

The roundabout in question was designed by a cyclist - who apparently doesn't drive - hence the fact that it's shaped like a runny egg with more apexes than you can shake a stick at. The only thing that roundabout needs to sort it is white lines around the roundabout itself to denote that there are actually 2 lanes. People forget because there's no markings and start drifting about.

What that roundabout really needs is a flyover...same as the one outside the tunnel.

I love the way people decide to take the left lane when turning right for Glanmire...

Somes it up perfectly IMO. It can be crazy alright, but like most roundabouts at any busy period, you gotta make sure your in your correct lane and keep an eye out for people drifting , lane crossing. I have been guility on a few occasions of doing it, more so in my early days of driving when roundabouts and what direction and exit to take were all new.

Just be careful OP, roundabouts can be dangerous, just approach them with care and try and ensure you are in your correct lane and be vigil while on the roundabout.

The lack of clear lanes on the roundabout is the major problem.

While we're on it, my dad said to me a while back that it's the person who is doing the maneuvering on the roundabout that is at fault. So even though someone is in the left lane trying to go to Glanmire, and I move over to left side from the right lane and hit them, am I still wrong?

And does anyone know why the flyover appears to have so many bumps, ridges and furrows over the interchange?

    +1 you're dead right.

I've seen two crashes on this rounadabout... both on the same exit.. two people side by side coming from the tunnel direction... the driver in the left lane wanted to go to Glanmire (WRONG!).. the driver in the right lane wanted to continue on to the right lane towards Tivoil (CORRECT)..... *bang*.

The worst part was a nice Alfa 156 in the right lane got creamed by a large old Nissan Jeepy thing.....

Here comes a rant..... we could keep talking about time again time again.... the fact is if you love your car you have to drive like a paranoid freak. You have to maintain your cocoon of safety around you at all times. Even if the plonker cuts you off etc you just have to leave them off. You can suffer damage to your car (and your body) even if you're 100% in the right as regards "rules of the road" .... it's an cruel reality that Muppets exist. They are among us. They own cars. They even have full licenses. And they are fully taxed and insured and legal on the road.. They also have no understanding of road positioning, spatial awareness nor any sort of hand eye coordination. Life is tough.

On a different note I saw a brand new BMW on the Wilton roundabout on Sunday with an indicator flashing.. Good to see BMW are fitting these as standard at last....... :p

Every round about in this country needs a flyover, so none of us have to go through one.
