Changed the oil in the car today. And being an idiot I didnt put the cap back on so have lost it somewhere along the road as it was left sitting on the engine.

The car is a Toyota Avensis 2002 D4D (Diesal). Can these caps be bought at a motorfactors or am i gonna need to order one especially from Toyota?

In the meantime can i drive the car? Safe enough to stuff a rag in the top of the pipe to stop any dust etc getting into the engine?

Thanks for you advise. Sorry for been an idiot :o

Block it off with a rag otherwise the oil will be blown out while the engine is running.

Toyota main dealer is your best bet, will usually have something like that in stock.

He changed the oil in his car yesterday. But was an idiot, and left the cap on the engine, which has now fallen off said engine, and is now probably on a road somewhere..

I did that before. Didn't realise until the oil light came on, and there was a rattle from the engine. Pulled over and there was oil everywhere. Was dripping out for weeks. Cheapest oil change ever :D

Yeah I forgot it once too but saw it as I turned the car on, with bonnet up, after the oil change. Oil started spluttering out of the filling hole all over the engine.

I did this once too :o

I also thought the oil cap was lost along the road somewhere but when i got around to cleaning the oil off the engine bay I found the cap lodged in there. I was kinda lucky in that my car at the time was an older model and the petrol cap was the same fit as the oil cap so I used that and bought a cheap replacement petrol cap in a filling station and continued my journey

I also did this once! can tell you when the bonnet started fuming i knew all about it, bad for me is that it damaged the sparkplug near the cap, had to get a new coil and sparkplug before the car would work, took a long time for the smelel to burn out. flet like a tit after it, i call it a stupid tax.. you only pay it once

I also paid that tax recently! Still paying for it with the burning smell. Funny thing is that the cap hadn't moved an inch from where I had set it in the engine bay.

The cap was still under the engine strut bar :) It didn't cause any issues in the end. In fact, I think the oilin if all the parts have made it run smoother :pac:

I wouldn't go blocking it with a rag either. I remember someone posting a link here a good while ago where that was done and the rag got sucked in and wrapped around the cam shaft. That would be some mess to sort out.
