Reception room size

Hi all. We're getting married in Mount Wolseley in Carlow next year and are very happy with it so far. The only thing thats bothering us is that the room the reception is to be held in is massive. It can be divided into two smaller rooms but i'm afraid that if we go with one of the smaller rooms it will seem too small.

We've 180 invited so expecting about 150 for the meal and another 50 or so will be coming after. The full size room seats 350 i think and the hotel has advised us to go with one of the smaller rooms.

Have any of you been at a wedding there? Would we be crazy to use the full room?

I got married in Cavan with about 180 guests in a room that could hold up to 350 or so. We used the whole room and honestly I thought it was perfect. We had a small area for the kids to play in and then there was a nice bit of space between the last tables and the bar but there was also more than enough space to move around in too, nobody was squashed at all. better have too much room than too little, just ask the hotel to make sure the tables arent too far apart.

I've not worked in mt. wolseley (booked there soon) but from experience I would recommend using the smaller space as it sounds like there will be enough room for your guests for the sit down part and the extras who will arrive later. Also you can expect 5-10% of people not to go for various reasons and when your entertainment starts there will be a busier looking dancefloor and plenty of seats. I would make the hotel put in writing that the will not have another wedding in the other section. Good look with your preparations.

Edit: I see Rachel has a different opinion but why not ask if you can drop in to see other similar sized weddings using both options?
That should give you a good idea and don't forget at any one time there will be a good few people outside smoking and older people often leave the room for a while for a quiet chat too.
