Late Payment... by 5 months

    A friend of mine is doing a 6 month internship with a company. They are 4 and a half months into their internship but have yet to get paid. They are contacting the company for the last ages.

    But only recently have they got it sorted. However basically they are now being told they will get paid monthly for 6 months starting next month, ie will get paid monthly after internship finishes for the duration required. My mate expected to get a bulk payment for those months pay that were missed or something and get normal pay from then on.

    Does my mate have any entitlements? There is no contract signed by him or anything.

    Hi Op

    By their very nature, internships are usually unpaid, sometimes lunch or travel costs are covered but this is usually stipulated in the beginning. Once they are being paid they will be in employment and need to have a contract of some sort.

    Is this an internship arranged by a college? If so, most colleges have a department for dealing with companies, maybe contact them...? Was there a contract signed?

    This internship is paid. A set amount per month was agreed on. Its the normal graduate stipend that the company pays.

    There has been no contract, but yes it was arranged through the college, maybe that is why no contract?

    The college have said they have done all they could. He will get his money in time, they are of the opinion that my mate should just be patient as he is getting the full amount even if it is over a different time period to that expected.

    My mate has bills etc so really could do with the money now rather than later especially considering they will be working 5 months by time they get a single months wage.

    On the other hand, I can't be definate but he is probably looking for a reference from them... Maybe not worth it?

    He'll also be not-working for 5 months and still drawing a wage.
