Whats your estimate for your IM Austria time?
    Mine is

    Swim: 1:10 (1:50 per 100m)
    T1: 0:05
    Bike: 5:25
    T2: 0:05
    Run: 3:25

Finish time: 10:10, would love to find that extra ten minutes to shave off but not realistic.

You must have got alot of training in over the past 2 months.

I've never done an Ironman. Is it normal to put down such low transitions when estimating time? Even for the pros these things are around 4 mins in total.

Surely 10 min could me made or lost over an event that lasts that long. A good swim might gain 3 min good bike 10 min and you could stay on track with the run.

Training hasn't been consistent but when it has happened has exceeded expectations. Last long IM bike 160km in 5 hours, last long easy run (below IM pace 42.51km in 3:10. Happy with progress just need to put it into practice. Nervous.

A friend that has done a few ironman read this and gave out to me for posting these goals. He said that if I was going to post goals I should at least be honest. So here goes:

    Swim: 1:05 (1:43 per 100m)
    T1: 0:05
    Bike: 5:10
    T2: 0:05
    Run: 3:20
    Overall: 9:45

Not much scope to shave time off here, maybe if I don't implode on the run but going to pace the bike conservatively.

    wow
I like that confidence if its realistc its the way to go (and i hope your budy knows his stuff)

not wanting to be sinical but a 160 k bike ride (pretty short) and a marathon might not be the best indicators if you did them on fresh legs.
and 9.45 with inconsitent trainining would mean you are quite a talent.

I wish you luck as I like your attitude

    a small reality check
whats your half IM pb and splits
and oly pb and splits ????
how many years in the sport ???
how much cyling and running have you done in the last 9 month ?
how many 6 plus hour rides have you done ..........
    whats your running gait like
and most importantly how tough are you mentaly

I would think that ironwannabe is either a) pulling our legs or b) has quite a bit more background than a bit off gaa and few sprint triathlons than he is letting on.

im fair sure its b) TBH

Neither were on fresh legs, 160km is short and I freely admit that my bike volume is massively lacking both in terms of distance and frequency.
I'm not a talent but I think 9:45 is possible.

Yes training was/is inconsistent but one can't get hung up on this sort of thing or it leads to all sorts of nasties - lack of balance in life and lack of enjoyment of the sport to name but a few.

Thanks, coming from the famous Herr Kerns that means something. Good article on you on www.irishtriathlon.com

I don't think any of my previous results are in any way relevant as this year is a different year and I think should be taken in isolation.

As for years in sport, I started playing hurling and GAA when I was 6, so 24 years I suppose.
    peter kern wrote: »

Cycling - fvck all compared to some.
    Running - a reasonable amount I think

    Fvck all]

My house doesn't have a gate. Keep meaning to get one cause the kids on the road keep using our driveway for goals.

The run of 3.20 is too conservative. Remember after the swim and cycle your body will be pumped up so you should start into the run at sub 7 mins/mile then after 15 miles when the adrenalin really kicks in finish on 6.30/mile. If you start out to slow you won't be able to get into your stride. This is based on your cycle time.

I know I've never done one but I did once do a 3 mile swim/ 150 mile cycle/ 38.4 mile run as part of my training for the 'Run across Australia' challenge last year.

    Best of luck.

I hope the mods reopen his training log after the 4th

Personally I think you are being too conservative. I would aim my sights higher if I were you and look to win the race.

After all if Marino Vanhoenacker can do it 4 times so can you.

I did offer gas analysis and lactate testing spreadsheets from lab testing and powertap files of rides and garmins of runs to prove that the initial goals of 10:30 were legit.

Not enough and the consensus that I wasn't serious was upheld and the training log shut down.

Would have been an interesting read as its been an interesting few months.

Long range forecast is for 28 degrees on the day, dropping to 22 after it.
I hope to fvck that they are a day out. 28 degrees will hurt.

control what you can control and prepare for the heat.
and 28degrees is absolute average for an IM
outside the Uk and Ireland ;-)

ps Id love to see your lab tests

Preparing for heat: gels than contain electrolytes and a few saltsticks on the bike and run, wear sun screen and a hat on the run?

I'm sure you would love to see the lab tests :)

    Getting nervous now

What is your race number in Austria..

I'll be tracking a few of my buddies and can keep an eye on you too!

When on the run be sure to soak youself in water at every aid station. They will have sponges in black bins. Grab a load of them and stick them into your trisuit. KEEP THE BODY COOL...

well for the next 10 days just imagine its o degrees outside and in the office, and dress accordingly for office and training sesions ;-0
wollen hut and gloves are a must for training. (your choice to look silly or race silly ;-)

I was told by a freind that a pro who did his first IM actually sleeped in for the race ...................
thats a bit over the top but I like it as the best thing before a race is sleep

    Swim 1:06:05
    T1 0:04:29
    Bike 4:59:01
    T2: 0:04:03
    Run 3:37:37
    Overall 9:51:17

Didn't drink on the run and was high 30s so got dehydrated and hence the less than stellar "run".

Overall very happy, hit times, had a good day.
