    Hi first,

Now im thinking of buying a diesel car, and I Kinda have it to 3 options:

Ford Focus tdci, VW Golf TDI or a Seat Leon TDI

    Focus is 115 bhp
    2003,
    will have 2 year nct,
    105k
    Three door
    for 4750

    Golf is 100 bhp
    2002,
    has 2 year nct,
    110k
    five door
    for 4750

Leon is somewhere between 89 and 110 bhp
    2002,
    1 year nct,
    107k for 3900

Than theres a car i saw but i dont know what to think
Its another 2003 focus tdci, 110k miles, 5 door hatch, with one year nct for 3300 but its got a few scrapes on the panels and could do with new discs all around and i dont know the garage well.

the golf and the leon are essentially the same car. check whether the ECU has been replaced as these give trouble and are expensive. don't know much about the focus. check honestjohn.co.uk

Get the 130Bhp golf/leon, you'll really appreciate that extra power. I recently moved from a 1.6 alfa to a 130bhp golf, and the power difference is VERY noticeable.

Make sure the clutch (release bearing) and flywheel are okay on both. They will have to be replaced soon (expensive job). Listen to the engine with clutch engaged and disengaged. If there's a slight knocking sound with clutch disengaged, then the release bearing is on it's last legs.

Also check for suspension problems (CV joints, anti-roll bar bushing and drop links). At that age/mileage, there may be work to be done here.

Obvious things like pads/disks should also be checked.

Just judging by the Leons HP (89 to 110) it seems to be that its an older generation of TDI to the Golf. VE vs PD. Although its slower for an everyday driver I think its the better engine. They are less prone to problems because people cant use the right oil etc.

The TDCI is quite a good engine so you have a tough decision on your hands engine wise. :D

    EDIT:

Check oil. On the Leon it should meet either VW505.00 or Vw505.01. Ask the owner. On the Golf it HAS to be VW505.01 as I dont think the VE's ever had a 100 hp unit so it must be a PD. The oil is SO important on the PD's. Feckin interrogate the owner some of the garages that pop up on its full service history about what oil they used or would use if servicing the car.
