    Hi guys,

I replaced the cat on my RX8. I was told that it's worth money due to the metals (platinum etc.) in it.

Anyone know if this is true or not?

I don't think they've contained platinum for 7 years or so. Scrap value would be less than €25 tbh.

I was told by Mazda that the reason they're so expensive to buy (€1600+VAT) is due to them containing platinum

Could be unique to RX8s I suppose. Ring a scrappie and ask their opinion would be best tbh.

I think they are due to the fact that the rotary engine is horrendous when it comes to emissions! Will do!

a friend of mine only got a qoute off honda for a replacement cat for his 1.8 '00 Accord, and the price was €1800, so i dont think its down to the rotary engine

I didnt think anyone was paying that kind of money for a cat nowadays. Surely there are aftermarket solutions for the honda accord at least. RX8 might be a bit individual though.

Yes they do contan platinium, but in very small quantities, they usually sell to the extrator specialist for 20 quids or so.

Some people in Ireland do collect them and ship them by large trucks to Poland where they extract the precious metal. A costly process but that seems to be worth if you have a lot of them and the proper equipment.

I know a guy that makes 10k euro regularly by selling to a company in Poland.

Go at it with an angle grinder and see if you can get the rare metals out! Might be worth something by themselves! :D

Find the nearest halting site, they will give you anywhere from 50 -200 quid depending on the car, they know all the makes and how much they are worth.

The brother is a mechanic, he gets hounded for Catalytic Converters off the travellers the whole time... that and batteries...
