Does Wordpress actually resize for its thumbnails?

    Just wondering, if you upload a large image to Wordpress and then insert a thumbnail (linked to the full size image) does Wordpress actually resize the image to the small 150 x 150 image? Or does it just scale down the image to make it fit that size, ie same file size and bandwidth used?

    I want to upload some quite high res photo's so people can click on 'em and see the originals, but I don't want people only glancing at the post to have to download a couple of megs of high res images!

    It scales down the image it doesnt resize it.
