    Well folks.

I have sold my own car at the weekend. It was a 07 A8 tdi. I dont know what to buy now. I was looking at the e class, A6 etc but nothing really does it for me. My wife has a new passat and i think its as nice to drive as the rest.

A friend of mine has told me he needs to sell his car urgently to get money. Its a 08 520 m sport with a good few extras like leather, bluetooth. There is only 40k kms on it and it was minded really well. What would be a cheap price to buy this car. I am wondering am i crazy spending money buying an expensive car when a passat is as good and nice to drive.

Any advice appreciated. Sorry for the confusing story im very hard pleased..........

Nothing new out there impresses me TBH. Only relatively new car I would be interested in at that level and class would be an S8.

Yes but i want diesel. If i want another A8 it will be the new model and that wont be available until the end of the year. I wouldnt buy a new one anyway.

New Saab 9-5 is pretty much the same size and weight as a normal wheelbase A8. According to this weeks Sunday Business Post it starts at 36k, smallest engine is 156 quid to tax etc.

    What about a Jaaaaaaag??
The new XJ looks really nice.
If a bit expensive then I feel the XF is more than enough for most people. And apparently the Diesel model is pretty good as well.

Out of interest, how much did your A8 go for? private sale I presume.

The new 520 comes with leather as standard and would be infinitely better than a passat. Check one out - I think they're awesome.

I sold it private mick i forgot to say to a man in longford. Im thinking of keeping the 36k and investing it in my business. I dont like saabs or the new bmw. As i said im hard pleased i only seem to like vws or audis. I do be in traffic and see a nice golf and think mmmm thats nice. I think i might go for a newish A6. Hard to get one with all the toys though.

Obligatory reference to Accord - Honda Accord, great car, and some money to your business too! ;)

How about an A5? Or S5? Are they too small?

The F01 is much more attractive than the E65 IMO but can you stretch that far?

Howz about picking up a Phaeton in the UK if you're so fond of VW's and Audi's?

Could you go back to a Golf or A6 after an A8!?!

    !

Why replace a A8 with a Phaeton? Kind of defeats the purpose of selling the A8 in the first place. A bit like replacing an A3 with a Golf, hardly much point...?

If you are fond of VAG cars then why not a Passat CC, at least they are rare enough on these roads while still feeling VAG:

No i quite like them actually. I think the passat cc that bazz pointed out is nice. Pity the sterling is so strong because i would straight to the uk and get something nice.

Its automatic. I went to look at it today it looks well but the only thing i dont like about the m-sport is that they have no chrome. I can buy it cheap but people say that beemers give trouble:confused:.

Can't comment on the more modern BMW's but I've had plenty of older models (6) and found them very reliable. Had two Audi's over the years and with both 50% of their cost price was put back in to them over the time I owned them in repairs. Maybe I was just unlucky..........

The new 7 series isn't the prettiest car, buts its interior is fabulous to sound a little camp, so much nicer then both A8s and S-class offers in my opinion.

And with the recent price drops, the 730d starts at around €90k I believe.

Hmmmmm hard one to call. Every lad has a different story. I wont be paying 90k for a car anyway. I bought my A8 at a repo auction not brand new....

Forget about the beemer after reading the road rage thread...

Well there's lots of unbelievable value with E65s, heres a cracker 730d:

I'd only wish you'd go petrol though, they're cheaper, faster, more refined and have the same motor tax. Consumption is the only downside but barely relevant over time with depreciation taken into account. 740i:

Another 740i but with an unusually high spec. Extremely unusual to get the full suite of seat options (heated/ventilated/massaging). Nice price and low miles too.

Nice spec but I will never warm to the E65, inside or out!

They're a nice car. I'm not mad about the MPack but auto is hard to find in that model. Maybe take it for a good spin, see what you think? BTW, if the car's still under factory warranty then you can keep extending it indefinitely - money well spent, IMO.

Why don't you try something different this time, as opposed to another saloon? I'd imagine that a 5 series will feel a bit of a step down from an a8.

How about a coupe, hot hatch or drop top? Some great value in performance cars these days.

In terms of what you are looking for I would echo another poster above in saying the Jaguar is a great non-VAG car to go for.

Normally I'm not a fan but they are having a bit of a renaissance right now..

There's everything from a Golf up to a Jag XJ or BMW & series being mentioned here....

What's your price range? Apoligies if you've already mentioned it in this thread but I didn't come across it when I was browsing quickly through + it's very early in the morning for me!

Also, why has no one mentioned the Skoda Superb - it's mandatory in these parts of boards.ie - FYI I'm not recommending it, I'd sooner walk.

Assuming that your price range is something around the price of a newish (09) A8 then going up the north is probably going to give you a greater range to pick from and also better value.

    I suppose your options are:

    Lexus GS 450H ()
    Jaguar XF Premium
    Audi A8
    Merc S (prob 320?)
    BMW 730/40 M-Sport

    Other options would be:

    Merc C63 AMG
    BMW M3
    Lexus IS F
    Audi S4/5

Good call. Brand new S4 is - IMHO - savage value starting from €57k.
