Mysterious Sky HD connection

    Hey guys,
My sister recently got sky hd installed in the house, so I went down to watch a match on bbc hd the other day...first thing I noticed was the picture wasn't great at all. I checked the connections to ensure she had a hdmi lead connected and not a scart lead, she did....but then the fun part. I proceeded to take the hdmi lead out completely from the tv and sky box to check it...and both the picture and sound remained!!!!
Now correct me if I'm wrong, but surely you need a hdmi connection to ensure a hd picture?? when you remove a hdmi, you lose BOTH picture and sound right?..does when I remove mine from my blu ray player..anyhow, I told her to ring sky and get an engineer out, cos she's paying for a hd product that clearly isn't hd.( currently has movie hd pack as well as basic). They're sending someone out on Friday for a look, so I told her I'd go down to her when they arrive and see what he does to FIX it;)...anybody shed some light on this??
    any feedback greatly appreciated

    cheers

well a Sky HD box has no way of sending a wireless signal so there must have been some sort of connection! Possibly she has a scart connection to a VCR or DVD recorder and the tv was on the VCR/DVD channel? I'd go back and disconnect any scart cables from the back of the box and leave the hdmi connected. Then switch to the HDMI channel on the tv.

Is there any other connection between the Sky box and TV? Maybe it is connected by scart lead and your TV is only viewing from scart lead and not HDMI. You can't get the TV to display from HDMI source by just connecting the HDMI cable between the sky box and TV.

Sorry, ye should have said that it was connected via scart lead to a dvd player/recorder...so basically all that's required is to remove the other connection and just leave the hdmi directly from the telly to the sky box to ensure a better picture?

well, no. you can leave the dvd recorder connected too, but that just means that sky will be visible on 2 different channels on the tv. One will be the DVD channel (since sky is connected to the dvd player). I'm presuming that the dvd player is connected to the tv via scart cable, so this will always be in standard definition. There is also a HDMI-specific channel on the tv and sky will be visible on this channel in HD.

No just leave all the current connections including the HDMI connection and go to the AV menu (SCART,AV,HDMI, etc) of your TV and select HDMI. You will find a button on your TV remote which will take you to a menu which will allow you to select HDMI. Check the TV manual if you still have it.

Hey guys..problem sorted. An engineer called out this morning to her and actually gave her a new box( said the hdmi connection was faulty apparently),
and set everything up for her. All is running well and picture is excellent.
    Cheers for all the replys;)
