what are my entitlements?

    I need some help.

My job is in jeopardy and I can't figure out what I might be entitled to if the worst happens.

I'm 28, living in rented accomodation. I have worked since the age of 18 but for the majority of 2007 and up until May of 2008, I was at other things and not working but didn't claim social welfare.

Really, I never earned all that much but I'm earning operative money at the minute as I have been for the last couple of years and really don't have any savings of any note.

There's something about 39 PRSI contributions for 2008 but I can't make head nor tail of it all.

It still isn't beyond the realms of possibility that I might be able to struggle on as is but I'm totally ignorant of how this all works and my head is spinning from information overload so any help is appreciated.

It means you need to have worked 39 weeks in 2008 to qualify for unemployment benefit. Unfortunately I was also stung by the travel bug and missed out on 2 months dole a few years back so I know only too well not having enough contributions!

If you are not entitled to unemployment benefit you should still apply for unemployment assistance, which is means tested on both your income and your circumstances (basically if you are living with a partner it will take her income into account). You may also qualify for housing benefit as you are currently renting, however the most you will probably get is an allowance towards a room and you won't be allowed to rent somewhere that costs more than the allowance. You should also stick your name down for a medical card. You'll never need to worry about money again.

I'd suggest you contact mabs who will be able to point you in the right direction.
