Golf mk4 catalytic converter question

Just wondering if anyone has experience with replacing a catalytic converter on a mk4 golf 1.6 16v??

In this model a new part includes the cat and the manifold. It costs around €600 to replace.

But you can also just buy the Cat on its own. Which is this for example http://www.micksgarage.ie/proddetails.aspx?pid=291959&pk=8A860 (very expensive) . I got it from the UK for €120.

Which is what I did. However you must cut out the old cat and put in the new one and weld it on. As the one piece includes the manifold and are €600. It saves a load of cash and I am not in a position to buy a full one.

Has anyone done this before? Is it ok to do?Thanks in advance. Also my garage said they would weld it on for me no problem.

    Hey Nick,

I'm looking at doing similar, how'd this work out for you, was it much in labour costs to replace?

Is it something like this you went with?
