I was just wondering are others thinking of doing this?
I have a close friend living in Belfast who said that he would be willing to buy the iphone for me. Am i correct in saying that if he buys it from o2, pay as you go, and has £15 credit in it, when he drives down to give it to me i can request an unlock from the o2 website? Is that correct, or would have to get it unlocked in the store itself?

If this can actually be done, i am seriously going for this option. Anybody else?

Its risky. What you say above is correct, but that relates the 02 current policy, for the current iphone.

There is nothing to stop 02 having a different policy for the iphone4...time will tell.

Yea, I don't want to do anything risky. Tomorrow or Tuesday is when the pricing is being released......i think.....so perhaps we'll find out then.
If it's more complicated than a simple case of having £15 in the phone and request that they unlock it, well then, i don't think it would be worth it.

I can't see o2 UK letting it go for £15 when they see O2 Ireland looking for €150 for the same thing. Also O2 UK seem to have brought their tariff more in line with the Irish rates than they were before.

I guess we'll know in a couple of days if they will change this.

does anyone know the price of the new iphone

same as the current line up.

    8gb iPhone 3G becomes 8gb iPhone 3GS for €99

    16gb iPhone 3GS becomes 16gb iPhone 4 for €199

    32gb iPhone 3GS becomes 32gb iPhone 4 for €299

personally I think anybody buying the 3GS once the iPhone4 comes out needs there brains examined!

    i still would!

Have been reading reviews, the iphone 4 completely made out of glass apparently isnt 100% shatterproof. Apparently, a few drops on surface can shatter the glass despite apples reassurances that its the hardest glass around, id still be weary about buying one!

Besides, the only major difference i can see between the two is the camera upgrade, i can still live with 3mp on the 3gs

it's not a kids phone, it's toughened glass but the glass is on top of the stainless steel, as opposed to be recessed (a la 3G/3GS).

Biggest reasons to spend 100euro extra:

    1. THAT screen. Obviously I haven't seen it myself. But reviews really do hold it in high regard. I would probably pay 100euro extra for this alone.

    2. The camera: 5mp camera AND HD recording @ 720p 30fps. Which leads me onto my next point...

    3. iMovie: has to be used with HD video. Just has to.

    4. Facetime: Ok so it might only be a novelty now over wi-fi iPhone4 to iPhone4 but this is a new standard. Apple have made this open standard for skype, fring, google, HTC etc to use at their will. By xmas it will be more advanced! Recently: when apple does something they do it right. Maybe late, but right.

    5. Looks: Its about 20% thinner and looks slick! Reports say it feels a lot more solid and engineering is tight as anything.

I could go on and on and on... but seriously, 100euro. Once off. Just do it!

If the above isn't enough then don't buy one and wait until you have to explain that you bought a brand new iPhone but oh wait it isn't the new one.

am i right in thinking now that with the sim free option with the iphone 4, we can just pre order a phone from Belfast and collect it and pop our sim and you're good to go??

Was just wondering about that myself, if you opt for the factory unlocked iPhone at £499/£599 I don't see why you couldn't.

from the looks of it, i think it is. And as the new price for the 3gs is €499 on the irish site, i'd say the Irish prices will be the same as the English prices. Don't see why I wouldn't make the trip and get it early.
The cheapest way to get to Belfast now.....

apparently it's gonna be priced at the following if you buy direct from the apple store and sim free..

    £499 for the 16 Gig
    £599 for the 32 Gig

the fact that all networks now stock the iPhone, makes you think that yes apple sellling the phone sim free now and good to go into the shop and buy there and then, as opposed to last year where you would have to get 02 to accept you.

what we're doing is, going to belfast next saturday and see what the craic is, but my mate is seriously thinking of buying sim free, i'm a bit more reluctant to splash out that much for it though lol

i sold my 3GS last night for €230 in anticipation for this, i put the money away, i'm waiting to see what pricing vodafone are going to charge, as, up to last night, i was using my Vodafone simple plan sim on it, 1 Gig of data, free vodafone texts and calls, and 100 texts and mins. worked better for me then 02, and if vodafone are offering a tarriff of 40 a month for similar, i'd buy it on contract from them.

but i need to know when vodafone ireland release pricing and plans so i know which is the best option, cause i can see myself heading to belfast next weekend and just buying one there and then lol
