The Dual Core is just that, two cores, like two brains in laymans terms. The i5 is a new gen and has 8 cores(in practical terms). This can be faster but a lot of software doesnt support all 8 cores right now. Its common that a fast dual will benchmark higher than an i5 at the same price for certain tasks.

The question is what are you going to be using it for?

The only i5 that have 4 cores are the i5 750 and 750s and as far as I know they only have 4 cores with 4 threads so no 8 cores. The rest are dual core and should perform better than a Pentium dual core.

just thought i should mention Alienware are a complete ripoff don't wast your money. Go to hardwareversand and build your own for half the price, just ask "building and upgrading" if you dont know where to start.
