People on here will be glad to hear that i'm after going back to my Carina for one more year.

Still have the Avensis parked in my garage waiting for next year when i have to drive it, but it feels so good being back in the Carina!!

Main reason why i decided to change back is that before i bought the Avensis i put a new timing belt into the Carina and other bits and bobs, so there was another good 60000 miles left in it or another year as a taxi.

Avensis is a nice car and people thought it was a Lexus for some reason?? But i'll drive it when i have to not when i want to.

    Who are you?

Why am I glad to hear your driving a carina instead of an avensis?

Why have you chosen to share this information with us all in an entirely new thread? Like where so you see it going?

In the past my beloved Carina has been a very popular topic for boardsies.

    Replying to that.

    And it begins...

Glad to see you went back to the auto Carina, it's the only way to travel.*

*Admittedly an autobox goes better with a 500SEC, but whatever works!

That really is an appalling attitude to have. If you want a limo order one.

I feel my attitude is appropriate!!!

There are already loads of threads discussing the for and against of older taxis in the fleet, I'm sure the OPs intention wasn't for this to develop into one so I won't comment further.

This standard should have been brought in years ago. There is no excuse for using a 10+ year old car as a taxi. Why they can't simply demand the all be e-classes or similer spec is beyond me. That kind of investment would rule out all the chancers and part timers and provide an appropriate level of comfort to passengers.

So you'd turn your nose up at a new Avensis or Passat ?
And wtf are wheelchair users to do ?

....... and no it wouldn't, part timers generally don't run there own car. If every taxi driver had to have an E class or similay you can be sure when he is snoozing he will have a part timer working the car in most cases.

No, but there not exactly massive in the back. Is it too much to ask for leather seats and reasonable legroom and a/c for the ridiculous prices charged? Taxi's are a luxury level transport method and car standards should reflect that.

have a small number of van-taxi's. the % of users who are wheelchair bound is tiny anyway. You would only need a very small fleet to cater for them.

No, they're not, nor is that the service they claim to offer.

Sorry, I should have added "Public" in before transport.
Amongst public transport that have all the attributes attached to what is considered a luxury good.

    point to point
    requested destination
    single user
arrive on demand (if phoned for)
    premium price

luxury doesn't mean ver high end gold plated etc, just high quality differenciated goods. though in the case of taxi's you can certainly argue quality :)

what i want in a taxi is a clean comfortable taxi which is driven by a courteous taxi driver who knows where they are going.

No reason why a carina cant satisfy the above.

To be honest, I am a fan of taking good care of a car, but I wouldn't hail down an old Carina. I'd think either the taxi driver was new to the job (might not know where he is going) and couldn't afford a newer/better car, or else doesn't feel the need too keep up with the taxi drivers with newer/better cars (surely any professional would want to keep up with the competition).
Plus, I don't own a fancy car myself, so if I have the choice between a ride in a Carina and a ride in a Merc, of course I am going to go for the Merc.
