I want to apply for the Graphic Design course in Napier for Sept 2011
as a mature student. I've some previous work experience in a graphic design company and have a small portfolio of design work built up.

What I wanted to know is, has anyone applied for this course? I read in the prospectus that at the interview they want to see design work but also drawings and creative thinking. I havent done art in school and cant draw to save my life! Im just a little worried that this will effect any attempt to entry.

Ive tried contacting Napier directly but they havent got back to me

Are you currently working? If not a portfolio prep course might be of help. fetac level 5 start everyone on the same basis skills. I did one last year, now i'm accepted to edinburgh college of art. I saw a giant improvement in the drawing skills of everyone who worked hard. What they'll want to see in your portfolio isn't really proper finished works but the development of ideas and a steady flow of work possibly leading to a conclusion but not always needed. Sketchbooks don't have to be just drawings but clippings of graphics you like, scribbles, notes, other influences ect.
Tbh you'll need drawing skills to get into any graphic design course, theres no way around it, so you'll need classes or a portfolio course for guidence.

thanks for the advice its kind of what i feared! :( i thought id have to have some sort of drawings to show. Looking at all the modules in Napier on the Graphic Design course there doesnt seem to be any drawing what so ever seems so strange that you need to be able to show you can draw even though you wont need to do it on the course!

Like from the creative side that they want to see I could do all that on computer but thats not exactly what they want to see i guess

Where did you do your portfolio class? Im not working at the moment but its kind of a catch 22....ive free time to do a portfolio class but i need to work to pay for fees! Or in Edinburgh pay for accommodation

From ppl i know who studied graphics and tutors advice, you need ti build from drawing, if you cant draw with a pen the idea is how will you draw with cad or what have you. Scotland is free fees as long as you've no undergrad from scotland. I think if you're serious u should look at portfolio prep, find out whats available in your location.
