As above, i've the N900 that past 5 months and not really happy about a few features...or should I say lack of features on it, namely the inability to send group sms's and even the ability to send a simply mms.

I'm on prepay and always have been. Im currently on the "free texts" plan with O2 for €20 per month. If I got an iphone, i would like to know can you send group sms's??

Anyone think i'm mad going from a N900 to an iphone?

    Cheers.

As a former heavy Nokia user, not really.
N900 is pretty much dead in the water as an OS. Nokia's Symbian ^3 v Linux strategy is a bit of a mess right now. N900 is turning into an anomaly as a device class and possibly as an OS. Support will prob shift away from it towards ^3 or future Linux. Its essentially a stepping stone device. On the other hand the iPhone OS is enjoying continued interest from developers. I've used the N900 for about 2 weeks, got sick of messing around pointlessly with it and just went back to the perceived "dumb persons smartphone" or simply "dumb smartphone"... ie. iPhone. Bollix. Its a polished ecosystem that is a joy to use. If you do make the move, I doubt you'll regret, it but ymmv. I'm platform agnostic but I'll use what is best, and right now the iPhone leaves others in the dust (overall) as a complete package, that doesn't crash or flake out. And I've used them all to be honest. Hope that helps. You can send group SMS's via Eirtext app (frontend for your online bundle, if you have it) as well as built in app quite easily.

It all depends on what you want. I went the other way, from a 1st Gen iPhone to an N900.

In terms of phone functions, as in camera, maps, internet, bluetooth etc., both the N900 and iPhone 4 are similar for what I want. The extra bits that appeal to me on the N900 are things such as Skye integration (I'm living abroad, so this is something I use a lot) and the absolute kicker - the FM transmitter.

There is no comparison in terms of usability and apps, the iPhone wins hands down. And I have to be honest, I am particularly bitter that the N900 is being abandoned by Nokia even though it is barely on the market 6 months, I really thought the phone had potential.

So, you have to ask yourself, what do you want out of a phone and does it justify the cost of the iPhone 4, especially after paying for the N900 relatively recently?

Thanks guys. Yeah the iphone really prob is best suited for me. I really thought initially that N900 would be the way to go, but as you said, its only a stepping stone and has been relatively forgotten by developers.

I might look into gettting a 3gs iphone on bill with o2. I would need unlimited texts and a data plan for it to be worth my while on a bill pay.

Never had a bill pay before so really don't like changing from prepay...but sure what can ya do.

    Hi Four of a Kind

I totally hear what you're saying on swapping the N900 for on iPhone. I am in the same boat. I foolishly thought because the N900 was a top of the range Nokia phone it had to be fantastic but frankly its been nothing but a disaster.

I was still willing to stick with it depending on the latest firmware release but as that turned out to be a complete waste of effort I have decided to go for the new iPhone when it comes out and the reaason is .... NO MATTER HOW BAD IT IS IT CANNOT HELP BUT BE BETTER WITH MORE FEATURES THAN THE N900

I don't own either but surely the point of the n900 is that it is basically a linux netbook with gsm capabilities? It was also widely described as such. I mean, I was researching the n900 before it was released and what appealed to me was that yes, while the UI and features were clunky compared to the iPhone, it was completely open for a user to develop on. Command line into the os yada yada yada. I mean, it in no way compares to an iPhone, so I'm just intrigued as to what you expected to get out of it for free?

Looking at the feature differences between the new iPhone and the n900, the only omission on the n900 is the gyroscope and perhaps pixel density on the screen. Instead you get FM transmitter and an open out of the box OS. Oh and flash :)

Yeah, exactly my thinking. And I waited for months for the bloody N900!! Don't know when the new iphone is due for release here do ya? I read somewhere that its not exclusive to o2(which was the inital thought by some).

I played with the N900 for a few weeks and I came to the conclusion that it was more of a techies phone because a couple of friends who are programmers seemed to quite like it and foudn it feature-rich. I, on the other hand, wasn't feeling it at all so I switched back to my iPhone 3GS. It doesn't have a fraction of the apps, isn't as user friendly, I wasn't comfortable with the mix of physical qwerty keypad and touch and didn't like using the stylus but felt that I had to becasue the interface had small icons. On the apps front, though, Nokia is doing lots to get an apps ecosystem growing in Ireland and there wil probably be a lot more on the scene within the year.

If you get it sim-free, or there is a jailbreak and unlock in the mean time.
