the key has to be got, laser cut and coded to the car , even if you found a blank key on ebay for 50 tha garage would still ask 100 for labour , call some garages (even ones up north if its financially worth it to go)

What's actually broken? The whole casing/chip or just the metal "key" part? Any decent locksmith (brown bro's in Dun Laoghaire is who I use) should be able to cut the same shape key and I'm sure they could stick something together with the chip.

Why is it a rip off?

You want good security for your car, remote entry, transponders and what have you? That sh1t don't cost 3 fiddy ffs.

People want the best of the best these days in their cars and don't realise there are certain technologies employed to give them that, which come at a high price if needing replaced.. Air Con, if crashed, being a good example. Air bags is probably a better one.

Broke the key for my 02 Landcruiser this week it's in 3 pieces but with some sticky tape I got it to start. I got quotes ranging from €150 to €210 from main dealers  I rang around and I'm picking one up from an auto locksmiths in the morning for €75 - I'll let you know if it works!!

Its a rip off because they charge so much for something which doesn't cost anything at all. A new key can be fabricated for practically nothing and the coding is a very minor job. In addition they insist you bring the car to the garage. The EU has recently directed that car companies have to release the info they keep secret so hopefully prices for jobs like this should be getting cheaper.

Have a look at a thread I started for a similar problem.

To get a key cut and coded and removing the broken one its an average price on a newer car.

Ok I got the replacment key today he did it for €55 in the end as it was just the blade and casing. He just transplanted the electronics. I'd a look at the other thread mentioned above and it's the same bloke Graham have to say he was sound he opened the shop just for me too. As for being a rip off I'd completely agree all the expensive bits are in the car not the key and during my search for a replacement I'd one garage say if I got the blank they cheapest they'd code it for would be €100 it's no wonder there's so many empty showrooms in this country.

My old man was charged e140 for a replacement barrel and key (non chipped) for a mark 3 Golf. I would have put that at 1/2 the value of his car. :p

Is there is a 3 year warranty on this car, this should covered?

If you break your key, it's not covered by warranty. Same as you hit the kerb and your wheel breaks e.g.

Now if the key broke in the ignition it would be a different matter
