i have just gone wireless with upc and am finding the connection very slow - i live in a standard 3 bed house and the wireless box is in the downstairs back room and the computer is in the front bedroom - i am only getting signel 50ish % - is this normal or crap ?? they are saying when i ring up that you lose 15% for every wall the signel goes through - i have also been told my people that the router you get is not great and that it would improve with a better routher-

It is very hard to know how good the reliablility of the router you have will be when using wireless, as factors such as distance, wall types, e.g concrete or stud walls are all a factor.

Try and keep your router up high eg on top of computer desk instead of under it.

What make of wireless router have they given you?

    Other options would be to

    1. replace the wireless modem you have been given...may not be possible with Upc... There are a couple of types B,G AND N Range
    2. Use a Networking Home Plug..this will allow you to send a network connection by using the mains socket in your house.
    3. Run a network cable from your back room to the room required..ensuring to use external cat5 or cat6 cable when running the cable outdoors..
    4. Check the wireless settings on your router, if possible switch it to broadcast mode g only it will travel further and ensure you secure your connection so that your neighbours etc are not surfing off your connection for free.

Have been using UPC wireless for well over a year and find it very satisfactory.
4 bed detached house, up to 4 laptops going at same time, router downstairs in one of front rooms and works fine even in back rooms upstairs (all solid walls).
Get them out to check your connections.
