Jetta / Vento

Can anyone help me understand the story with these cars(90s vitage) lately?

The amount of young lads buying these lately and putting alloys and german plalts on them, and then putting the seat back and shaping around towns is gone mad.

Are these cool now? At the end of the day they are a farmers car. The engine is either a pile of poo 1.4 or even worse a 1.6diesel with about 50bhp.

I cant see the attraction in them at all.

Theres one near me and it was an old farmers shítbox, some youngfella bought it sprayed it with blackboard paint, cut the springs down to nothing and slapped 17" dished alloys under it and a nice little front splitter.

Honestly. I think it looks class!

But seriously aren't Jettas/Vento's part of the racing scene in the USA, aren't they up there with Civics and the like? Im sure there was a couple of Vento's in the fast and the furious movies so not entirely a new thing.

But the cars in the states are 2.8 VR6s which are cool.

The thing i dont get is the irish ones that are getting pimped up are complete **** bag cars, crap suspension, engines are rubish

I know of a few VR6 ventos knocking around.

I think a nice Jetta/vento slammed on nice rims looks class (no matter what the engine) i'd rather see one of the above over rough punto/colt/corsa/astra/civic with a wavan pipe exhaust hanging out the back.

Besides why does it bother you so much what other people drive?

where did i say that there was no vr6s in the country:confused: majority of these cars are 1.4s or slow diesels. just trying to figure what so appealing about them esp ventos, nobody looked sideways at them 2yrs ago

why does what bothers me bother you so much?

and i cant see the attraction in a white 1.4 civic with type r badges plastered all over it a bin as an exhaust but loads of others do as is apparent with about 50 of them doing laps of the town on a saturday night!!
i think its a thing called PERSONAL TASTE!!:D

You implied that all the Jetta/ventos in the US were VR's,which kind of backward implies that none of the ones over here are.

I quite like the MkII Jetta. If I'd enough spare time, space and money I'd probably buy one - a 1.6D. I wouldn't tart it up mind - I'd like to to keep it as close as possible to factory spec.

Fail yourself, you cant even get your point across without getting personal with a stranger that you know nothing about.

My point is the following types of cars always have always been cool, both new and as a classic:
    Mk1/2 escort
    mk1/2 golf
    pug 205
    etc etc

A vento was nothing but a farmers car up until about 2 years ago.

Im a big vw fan by the way, I learned how to drive in early 90s ventos/golfs(mk3s), this is where i am coming from they were a terrible drive, slow and lardy and crap suspension. Cant understand how so many people would spend big money on them.

i think there was a 1.9tdi version so they arn't that slow with a screwed out pump etc and i think its to do with the new theme of low and slow?

and the fact that no1 modified these 2 years ago is the same for every old school car that is done up, no1 cares untill they see a lethal looking example then everyone wants one until they end up like the corsa or fiesta

Because it makes him a hypocrite.

How can he say anything about somebodys car when he drives a safe, mundane, generic ,underpowered, uninspiring lump of metal ,which will hit the scrapper in a few years?

Unless he actually does drive something interesting I think his opinion on cars is a bit stupid.

what do you think of american muscle cars?

Your logic is flawed. A car can be "crap" and still cool, ask owners of many british sports cars.

A vento was a "farmers car" in backwards bally-go-nowhere?? When was Fast and the Furious released? It was in that film, and played a starring role. They wouldnt put and sack of crap in a car film:rolleyes:

how am I getting personal? because you fail? Its not my fault your definition of cool is whatever you think the crowd says.

Cool is what something means to you? What do you drive? I bet its not very cool.

Boxy starlets were all the rage with young lads when I was in secondary school (over 10 years ago) so nothing new there. E30 Bimmers aren't cheap tbh.

A chap in Cork is driving around in a matt black, slammed 3 door Polo on wide 13" wheels, looks well but he put a huge white sticker on the back window saying "Po / Low"

He is one of those dudes who parks up with his buddies and they then stand around looking at the engines and smoking.

What's wrong with that? i don't smoke but there's nothing i love better than standing around talking about engines and shooting the breeze,be it over a mk2 diesel Jetta slammed on nice wheels or a Ford GT40.

so what, its a culture, same as people standing around smoking talking about football, nobody rolls their eye's at them, its a passion for people to spend money on and admire the finished result, a car that means the world to them, they have put their money time and heart into it and it annoys me when people slag other's because they think they're obsessive about a piece of metal that gets you from a-b. To some people a car is almost as important to them as a family member, yes that guy spent money on a little polo but it's probably the best he can afford right now and he made the best of it, alot better than leaving it standard with rusty steel wheels and spinning up and down the main-street like a small minority of young men/women who get the rest of the car enthusiast's a bad name and they all get tar'd with the 1 brush, yes they may stand and look at their engines but why not,i bet some of them have spent more on their engines than others on an entire new car, so why wouldn't they show it off or discuss it?

I rolled my eyes at the sticker.

Popping the bonnet on a 1.3 Polo and the buddies ole lads Focus or similar and having a peak at the induction kit is fairly sad to be honest.

Edit, he also spins up and down the main street repeatedly.

fair enough if it was a 1.3, and although it still goes on, spinning up and down the street is slowly dieing out, i'm actually glad to see slogan's on car's like, low, slow, pow etc, better to see a polo as low as a turtle's sack that can't pass 40 because of the fear of pot hole's putting a hole in the car than a standard 1 flying on a country road,

however there have been tdi polo's modified to put out 200bhp, or 1.3 petrols turbo'd etc which are worthy of looking at.

my point is people shouldn't face palm at people looking at engine's,for all you know it could be a master piece of engineering

look the fact is, 70% of people replying to this thread are not in any way car enthuasiasts, just thick ****s with a chip on there shoulder moaning about young lads that give a sh!t about their car. what harm is being done in 2 cars parked in a carpark chatting etc.

if you knew the car scene in any way, you would know that 99.99999% of us are not out there to cause trouble/ intimidate the community or kill fellow road users in our cars. we are simply people that have a hobbie, that happens to be in the shape and form of a car, we care about our cars and it seems that alot of people have a problem with that.

    TVR/Lotus/MG
All seriously quick cars, and look **** hot, again have always had a huge following from car enthusiasts since the day they left the factory.

exactly my question. F&F was released in 2001 yet ventos only became poplular to buy and mod about 2yrs ago.

Also if you look at any vento that is modded in ireland it doesnt look anything like a f&f vento which had big wheels, fast engine, sorted suspension, gamy paint job, stickers.....

Will today's toddlers be slamming Octavias in 20 years time ? When I was a lad in my early teens we were all into Celicas and Twin cam Corrollas, VTi Civics, Preludes etc. The Jetta was considered a poor handling, sh1tty looking yoke that the farmer in the classes ole lad drove (I'm from the city but a few country lads went to our secondary school).

Nowadays apparently propor motor enthusiasts must have a Jetta :D

Yea and as a result the forum is clogged up with ****e threads amonst the few decent ones. Wonder whose fault that is:rolleyes:

Motors threads usually involves somebody moaning about being ripped off, pedantic discussions and bad driving, paranoid motorists fearing their mechanic isnt trained and ripping them off.

Then the odd day you get a thread thats gold. I wouldnt consider it full of "Ethusiasts". Maybe threads like this should be expected?

FWIW I wouldnt buy a vento but I wouldnt start a thread moaning about how some people buy them and mod them. I think that sort of elitist crap is bull**** and this forum is full of it and Id admit that im well capable of spewing elitist ****e sometimes too.
