I still think its a disgrace its (mod note: it =Galway marathon) on the same time as the longford half and full.

Fair enough it sthe world 50k final but I get the impression that this half and full will be regular thing? And if so, is it a commercial race or are all funds going to local charities and clubs like longford?

If so ye should not clash with longford, thats only right.

People mention that Cork and Limerick on the same day, and I believe Limerick should not of done that too.

I totally agree with the point of the 2 marathons on the same day. If its only this year because of the 50km world champs fair enough but if not its a shame because there is plenty of room on the calendar.

Average runner - I dont think Cork and LImerick are on the same day?
Limerick full was the day before the Belfast marathon on the first May bank holiday.
So , we agreed then? Boycott Galway next year in favour of Longford if they clash again?;)

The same day looks bad but let's face it for most people a marathon clashes if it's within 2-3 months of another. If we are going to have more than 4 marathons then clashes are inevitable. How many marathons have we now?

    April: Connemara
    May: Belfast
    May: Limerick
    May: Newry
    May: Burren
    May: Kildare
    June: Cork
    June: Portumna
    July: Bogtrotters
    August: Longford
    August: Galway
    September: Dingle
    September: Mooathon
    October: Dublin

    Any others?

Looks like winter is the gap in the calendar unless I'm missing one which I'm sure I am. Some countries have nighttime new years eve marathons which sound good but I guess would be a right pain if it were like this year with ice, etc.

Won't be doing the full myself Brutes but will probably try the half just to check it out.

    Newry City Marathon - May.
I think Kildare will be going full next year also.

Add Newry in may and mooathan in september and the 14 west of ireland marathon series and as hard worker says kildare is meant to go full next year as is the irish multi marathon. Then you have charity races like the 32 marathons in 32 counties ect..
As far as i can see there is a huge gap from october to april. Why are no organisers capitalising on this.
Clare burren also in april i think.

so it looks like we have at least 14 marathons in Ireland in the middle 7 months of the year and none for the other 5. That's not including the west of Ireland series (not sure if that was a one-off.?).

the problem i find with alot of the marathons is when you go into the country side it gets quiet lonely.

Alot of marathons do cups of water instead of bottles which turns me off them as like to carry the water for a mile sometimes as might not need it straight away.

Good we needed on in March as a warm up for Conn. Paddy's day is perfect timing actually.

I can't help smiling at the idea of 26.2 miles being a warm-up....:D

I'm looking for a December marathon.

Cliffs of Moher is going full next year too. September 2011.
Personally I don't see a problem with them clashing. Over time, the more popular marathons will succeed, while the less popular marathons will bleed away. The only disadvantage is for those runners who would hope to run all the Irish marathons in a year.

A December marathon would be great. It's nice to have a marathon about 6 - 8 weeks after ones like Dublin in case anything happens in the run up to a goal race you can have a few weeks to recover and still have a race to go for afterwards.

you just want a marathon every week RQ.

I'd actually agree with that, a New Year's race would be awesome (start at 10-11pm and run through the turn of the new year :D )

we could do that outside our house actually. There is a lit path that runs alongside the harbour so you would hear all the boats at midnight and the fireworks from the other side of the harbour. Would be laps of about 4 miles though. I'd need two volunteers and to ask some people not to park their cars on the footpath but otherwise should be pretty easy to run.

They'd make a few nice training runs. :)

    Sold. Entry form in post.

(Quick aside, I was told of the great "Bale, Ale, and Dale" race in harvest time England. Carry a bale of hay to the top of a local hill. Carry a quart of ale in pint glasses back down the dale (without spilling). Swallow pints at bottom, and sprint to the village. Worth training for:))

    Wouldn't be great for a PB though - "I started a marathon in 2010 and didn't finish until 2011!"
