Keep all wWorld Cup chat in here please folks. This will be merged with the main OT thread after the world cup. Not everyone is into football (for shame) so it will be unfair to have the other OT thread clogged up with just footy talk.

    Just to get it rolling.

I want Spain to win this. They have by far the strongest squad and play in a most beautiful style. A victory for Spain is a victory for aestethics. However, as they lack a good and experienced defensive midfielder, i think they might get caught out in the latter stages. Sergio Busquets, while a decent player, I am not sure he can carry this role, and Javi Martinez is not tied at this level yet.

I think England have an extremely good chance of winning this outright. They have a piss easy group, and should have a decent last 16 draw as well against either the murderous Serbs or Australia, and in the last 8 they could play a very poor French side.

Holland look very good this time as well, but I have them facing Brazil in the last 16, and as I think the latter will go to the final, thats the end of it.

Argentina are an enigma. Really cannot call it. But, if they play to their strengths they will go to the semis at the very least. Maradonna is a moron though, and by looking at his squad selection, it is easy to see why they could just as easily fall at the group stage as win the damned thing. Leaving out Cambiasso, Riqulme and Zanetti is truly unforgiveable. Picking Collocinni should be a sacking offense given that the far superior Gabi Milito is fit and available for selection again.

    Happy world cup mofos :D

So who has what bets on?

I've Spain to win outright, €20 on at 4/1. Return of €100. Nice night out there.

And I've an accum done up - Argentina, Spain, England, Italy, Germany and Holland to top their groups. €7 gets around €70 back.

If either came though I'd be happy out

Itll be an interesting WC to say the least! should be fun - especially with the fantasy league going!

Now lets all sing the Irish World Cup song: NSFW :pac:

I'll be supporting England this time. Having to put up with the British media in the past always put me off them winning but thanks to broadband I can now avoid those w@nkers much more easily although it was unfair of me in the past to spite the team because of them.

To give the obvious answer though I do expect either Spain or Brazil to win it. USA to be dark horse semi finalists most tournaments tend to have.

Just got my bets in there.

    €20 win Spain @4/1
    €10 e/w Germany @14/1
    €5 e/w Villa Top Scorer @8/1
    €5 e/w Higuain Top Scorer @18/1
€5 e/w All top teams to top their groups - returns €162
€5 Todays games to finish in a draw at ~10/1

Also have a few other antepost bets

    Spain and Messi @ 60/1
    Spain and Villa @ 22/1
Spain and Brazil/Holland to reach final @ 18/1 and 25/1

Souness - "Of course you would be a good dancer if you are from that part of the world".

There has to be drinking games here. I wonder how long bhefore the term "naive defending" is used in this afternoons game. And indeed how long can a commentator go without mentioning it in any game an African team is playing?

Other such cliches we should hope to hear is "samba football/atmosphere" when Brazil are playing, "clinical" in reference to Germany, "bulldog spirit" in reference to England. "Big tournament bottlers" has to be used with Spain and of course "I don't rate their defense" and "spirit of 86" should crop up alot in reference to Argentina. I have no doubt that Holland famous "dressing room infighting" will crop up more than a few times as well. Not to mention how often Thierry Henrys left hand will be referenced.

    Good times.

Jesus those horns are going to be annoying, could tell that since Confederations cup, Mexico 2-0

if anyone finds a stream where commentary is piped in from the studio i.e no stadium sound please post it at any point during the world cup. It probably wont be as bad when its not South Africa playing though as the other fans wont be constantley blowing those things, however their will be locals at all games in some number you would imagine.

you will hear these horns in every single game throughout the tourney.

why is there a soccer thread in a wrestling forum??? why not keep the footie talk to the footie forum?? dont get me wrong i love football and intend to watch every single minute of world cup but why is there a need for a thread here?? seems kinda redundant.

because we are wrestling fans but i assume we can only talk about the world cup in this thread and not about wrestling....................................

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,153 ✭✭✭Jolt2007

Those horns are so distracting. I keep thinking a swarm of a million bees are on there way to attack the players.

Well we are all going to be talking about the World Cup and many of us are involved in the FF league so the Off Topic thread will just end up a football thread anyway. Incidentally, looks like me and flah are head to head in the McDonalds game.

I'm hating those damn horns tbh.

Today is the beginning of a new game. Every time RTE's football pundits or commentators say something vaguely racist, I take a drink. Anyone know a good liver specialist?

In fairness, we'll see plenty of naive defending if the Cup of Nations is anything to go by. Actually, there was a funny moment in the last Football weekly where Barry Glendenning had to explain that his talk about naive defending wasn't just casual prejudice but based on what he'd seen!

Props for thinking of the drinking game.

The home nation take the lead, my 2-1 is still a possibility but that was a great finish and the support will really get behind them now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,391 ✭✭✭D2D

Yer man commentating on Itv went mad when that went in. My 3-2 is slightly optimistic

great save from the S african goalie

can't listen to those horns it really spoilds the game in a major way, you cannot even hear the crowd. it's like it's being piped in through speakers because even when RSA scored there was still horns buzzing, if it were horns being blown by people wouldn't they stop the cheer the goal os stop to be pissed off if they were mexican. after all the build up and the talk and the hype it's being ruined by the noise. it's a shame.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,492 ✭✭✭EdK

RTE have had complaints about the horns already but theres nothing they can do about it so we have to put up with it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 98 ✭✭Richie..Galway

it's weird because watching all the shots of the people in the crowd i didn't see one horn anywhere

Can definetly see them beating France (I'm not being ABF btw)

SA/Mexico wasn't a bad game to start us off. First half was pretty dead imo but the second half livened up. 1 all was a pretty fair result

I'm just sickened Marquez scored when I left him on the bench in my FF team

What was the story with Mexico's disallowed goal today?, The keeper was beyond the ball and the striker put it in the net and was ruled offside even though SA had a man on the post, Have never seen that before?

2 men have to between the striker and the goal (keeper and a player)

    Ugh, another draw:(

    Treble returns about 10/1 again.

I backed South Korea so I am happy enough. Still a bit gutted about Uruguay not winning so I am only breaking even really. :(

I might back the yanks in the Draw no Bet or handicap markets.

Oh and ye all probably know this but for those who don't the matches will be on RTE I Player in the evening or the next day. :)

I won't be able to watch the Argentina match properly as I will be working so i will catch it on that service. **** highlights. :pac::pac:

I still wont jump on the Messi bandwagon. The amount of times he just cut across the box to the left to try and curl a shot in. Wait till he comes up against the smarter managers. I think he will be found out like he was against Inter.

Hope Rooney destroys the yanks tonight, just to silence this Messi talk. Every second thing they said today was Messi this, Messi that. I'm not saying he's not good, he's very good, I just think he is very over-hyped.

    Sorry Gimmick bai
