I'm upgrading. I need a desktop so it can have lots of RAM for Kontakt (also running Pro Tools). There seems to be some talk about a new processor coming. So should I wait a while?

PS don't bother recommending the PC route I'm a Mac Evangelist. :)

Wait for the new Mac Pro.

Any inkling of when that will be out?

I have the existing mac pro:
    8 processors
    16Gbs of Ram

and i still have problems running pro tools. It might be a good idea to wait for the new one to come out.

It should be soon. like the next couple of months. It still has to be qualified by Digi then of course which can take a couple of months !!!!. Are you HD or LE MadT

Carrollj, what issues are you having? Is it LE? What OS?

Hi Denis, I'm M Powered, and considering moving to Logic. Just looking at some used quad core machines on ebay, I might go for that rather than new, what do you think?

When the new processors come out the current top of the range always drop significantly !!!! There is a debate about speed versus no of cores, all to do with multithreading and which DAW is your preference. I think in general if you are using a lot of VI's go for faster speed rather than no of cores as most of them dont use multiple cores yet. Either way any Macpro from the last year or so will be a rocket with Logic.

Refurb Store. I'd not bother wating on a new one. Plenty of deals on the refurb store.

im running a macbook pro with logic and kontakt 4. no problems with a full steven slate drumkit, maybe a keyboard or two, and a bass loaded in kontakt. all plays back no problems. its 2.53 ghz dual core, 4gb ram. can't imagine a mac pro wouldn't take it in its stride. maybe its protools that is the weak link

Thanks lads. Got the laptop. Does it make any sense to get a desktop machine also?

Congrats. Nope I'd not bother. As you can see there are plenty of people using laptops as the main machine. May do not harm to use an external HD, but you may already be doing so.

What trouble are people having? We've 20 dual quad cores running M-Powered at work, no hassle.
