Pulled out the Mexicans in the sweepstake so hopefully they can fluke their way to getting to the semi's.

    [/optimism]

    I've just wasted my money.

I predict South Africa 1-1 Mexico and a muted tv.

    Viva Mexico!!

Thought they very entertaining to watch in the friendly versus England. This should be a good game to get the tournament going.

According to the Beeb, Parreira has named his starting lineup like so:

Same side that played the last 2 friendlies.

    G'wan Bafana Bafana!

Vela with a hat trick of hat tricks.

I will wager you 10 sachets of self respect that Chicharito outscores Vela this summer. What say you?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,142 ✭✭✭koHd

    SA 2-3 Mexico

Mexico are the Arsenal of international teams. Lovely football, good goals, but will always gift goals to the opposition. Which means I am looking forward to watching all of their games. Should be entertaining.

That's an even better idea - I could do with saving the self respect for a drinking session on Saturday anyway ;)

If they end up level, we both donate, being the good sports that we are?

You have yourself a deal Archi.

Watch them both finish on zero now :pac:

Mexicooooooo. Have a bet on with a mate that SA won't score any goals in the tournament.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,477 ✭✭✭grenache

Mexico will win this one, and win it convincingly. They are consistently one the more impressive early round teams in the WC, and their current form is good. They've quality all over the pitch - Marquez, Juarez, Dos Santos, Vela and the man of the moment Chicharito Hernandez who's scored in their last three matches. Scored a $hit load of goals for Guadalajara too which gave him his United move. Not even the quality of Mokoena or Piernaar will be enough to save SA from an opening day defeat.

    Serf Afrika 1-3 Mehiccoo!

That would be funny considering they hired a choreographer for their goal celebrations

You make it sound like they got Micheal Jackson back to teach them to dance. It was only Andy Ansah, I reckon I could get him to my debs if I asked him.

South Africa are terrible, but think they just might sneak a 1 nil win, maybe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,592 ✭✭✭✭Dont be at yourself

Home support won't be enough for Bafana Bafana. Hopefully the ref won't be influenced, and we get a good game. Don't know if Mexico will do enough for the win though. Draw it is!

Mexico, no question. 2-1 or 3-1.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,814 ✭✭✭✭JPA

Don't underestimate what having a whole continent behind them will do to SA, they will win today and get through the group IMO.

So I was looking at the RTE live (internet) tv schedule and it goes as follows:
    15:00
    World Cup 2010
Live coverage of the opening game of the 2010 FIFA World Cup as hosts South Africa take on Mexico at Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg. Kickoff at 3.00pm
    02:35:00 ROI Only

    15:30
    The Great Escape
Four part series following families who have left Ireland for a new life abroad
    01:10:00
Which worries me! Is it only going to show the first 30 mins??

If so is there anywhere else I can watch it?
    Cheers

Nelson Mandela won't be at the opening match today, his 13 year old great grand-daughter was killed in a car crash yesterday after the opening ceremony concert. Sad news.

Mexico -1 at 5-1 isn't a bad bet at all. Could be a good start to the world cup.

Tragic news. Heartfelt condolences to the Mandela family. It would have been incredible for Madiba to be at the opening ceremony/match but he has far more pressing concerns.

Ke Nako Bafana! Do it for Zenani Mandela.

Given that the host nation has never failed to qualify for the knockout stages, that seems unlikely

South Africa to either draw or sneak a victory. They have the home advantage and the whole stadium will be behind them. While Mexico have the flair and style up front, their defence is shaky at best. Will be goals certainly.
    Go on Bafana Bafana

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,953 ✭✭✭Vinta81

South Africa. Like a second home at this stage.

Bafana Bafana! Gonna be a good start!

I popped into the bookies this morning and laid down a bet on Mexico to win.

Then the lad behind the counter tells me to pick a name out of the hat for the sweepstakes and I got South Africa :D

Mexico team v South Africa: Perez, Rodriguez, Salcido, Marquez, Osorio, Torrado, Franco, Vela, Aguilar, Juarez, Dos Santos.

He lost out to the better Premier League Forward.

    That's not Franco.
