    Hi,

What happens if a car is economically written off??
(Costs more than the value of the car to repair)

    Thanks

The ins co pay you the pre-accident market value and assume ownership of the car.

But the car is worth a lot more to me than its worth!!

The mileage is very low and nct till next year!

you could always choose not to claim on the insurance and simply take the car..

    couldn't you?

I think you can arrange to buy the salvage from the ins co.

I just want my car repaired and back to the way it was. I dont want it taken from me and given money for a car that will never replace my own. Its old but its been well looked after.

How substantial is the damage and how much are you talking to get it repaired compared to how much its worth?

I'm afraid they're under no obligation to do that. You could buy the salvage and use the insurance payout to have the car repaired, though.

Im not sure... I'm waiting on those details. Its a 99 and damage could be worth 1000+ because of where it is damaged.

But as i said, its in great nic! Could be a brand new car based on the interior alone and has less than 30,000 miles!!! The last thing I want is to take cash for it! I also put money into it.... new timing belt, new tyres, service, nct, etc etc and is worth a lot more to me than what its really worth. The accident was not my fault and I would be gutted if because of this accident I would have to give my car away for some cash .

I'd see what they offer first.

Ye well chances are theyll value it at approx 1500. For that money I wont get a car nearly as good as my own!!!

That's the thing with insurance and old cars, if I (god forbid) crashed the BMW in the morning I'd probably get feck all for it... Your choices are outlined above I'm afraid, if it's worth that much to you, take the money, buy the "salvage" and repair it.

What's involved with buying the 'salvage'????

Talk to your insurance company! Make sure you can buy it for one!

Can they not pay a smaller sum out to me and I can repair it cheaper??
What happens with the insurance then?? Am I still insured?

Afaik the insurance year ends and you need to take out a new policy.

To be very honest, they'll be able to answer all your questions better than us! Just write down all your questions and answer to them so you don't forget!
