Guys I have an odd one here. A friends 97 Polo starts fine , drives fine , stops fine and then starts fine again. It'll do this 9 out of 10 times. Then out of the blue it just wont start and acts like the battery is flat. Doesn't matter if you leave it for the day or you were driving it 5 minutes before. You try to turn it over and the starter just labours ala a flat battery. Put the jump leads on and away she goes, turn it off straight away and try to start it again and it fires up first time.:confused::confused:

Any mechanics got any ideas on this one. Is it just a gammy battery or am I missing something. Thanks in advance.

Might be just the battery contacts or the wiring to the starter. Try brushing and some contact cleaner.

The battery terminals are fine. I forgot to say that when it happens the clock goes back to 0:00 so it cleary is having the effect of a flat battery. Im puzzeled!

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Was gonna say bad contact on fuse / relay to do with fuel pump, but that wouldn't reset the clock, would it?

No it shouldn't. What about a sticking starter and it somehow saps power when it doesn't start. To me I'd say its a problem with starter or wiring to/from it or battery. Or it could be a dodgey battery?

Gonna try another battery and see what happens. Its a bloody odd one!

Jump start wouldn't work in that case. Has to be battery related.

Probably dead cells in the battery?

Try a new battery and report back :D

I agree with the dead cell theory.

Right lads , stuck a new battery in it for him and turned it on and off numerous times with no problem at all. Left it sit and tried it again and the same result, starts no problem. We'll see how things go tomorrow! :)
