Just following on from a post made by Nulty a few days ago in the 'Breeding Jumpers' thread:

What else happens at these sales? Having no experience of the industry would I just be going to look at them walk around the ring? Not saying that would be bad..

The sales are on today and tomorrow, starting at 10am each day. The catalogue for each day can be found here.

I happened to be in Naas today, so said I'd drop down and have a look. Saw a few nice horses when I was there (was only there for about 20 lots) and the few horses I picked out as 'nice' horses made between €20 and €40k.

Granted the prices are down on what they were a few years ago, but until I win the Lotto I'll just have to stick to dreaming of owning these horses!

    Sounds good.

Is it at 'Breeze up Sales' that the horses gallop for everyone to see them before they go to the ring? Or do they gallop on request from a prospective buyer at the others - or how does it work?

I'm gonna go to the Derby sales as suggested by finarrk and want to know what to expect. Do they all canter/gallop or just some?

The Breeze up sales are where horses 'Breeze' or do a workout in front of everyone. All horses have to breeze before going through the ring later in the day or the next morning.

The Derby sale your going to will be the same as the Landrover sale, NH horses for sale - most untried. Unless it has Breeze Up in the sale title you won't see any 'action' :D.

The UK have a fair few Breeze up sales, thought there was one recently down in Goresbridge and that would be about it in Ireland.

Not much I can add to what smartaform has said already; they've pretty much covered everything!

Even though most of the sales don't include a breeze up, I still find them interesting enough, and like to pick out the horses that I'd like to buy (when I win the Lotto!). You also get the opportunity to learn a lot about the breeding side of things as the pedigree of each horse's dam is provided in the catalogue.

If you're interested in getting a look at the Derby catalogue you'll find it here. As you'll see, the majority of the horses are unbroken.

Yup Goresbridge have had at least one. With the horses working out in nearby Gowran Park and auction back in Goresbridge.

They can be. Depends on what you're looking for and what's on offer! :) I've gone to a few where the majority of horses were only just gone into training and so would have taken quite a while to get ready, while other days there's a better mix.

Best thing to do is keep a look out on the relevant sites and see what sales are coming up and what the catalogue is like.

We're buying a horse at the Derby sale. I didn't have the syndicate ready for the Land Rover where we normally buy. Picked up Brave Inca and Raise The Beat in the Land Rover and Kimberlite King at Derby sale.

If you get there early, pick out your top five or ten lots of the day based on pedigree and go have a look at them. You'll have to find their box but once there, ask them to pull the horse out. Have a look at it standing, check it's height by walking into its shoulder and seeing how far up your body it goes. You'll have a marker in your head (e.g. chin height is perfect but nose height is too tall, shoulder height too small). The ask the lad/lass to trot him up. You're looking for fluid movement, like an athlete. If you think it moves a little strangely or with a heavy shoulder then note that and move on. Fluid movers glide over the ground and use all their body. you don't really want a horse out of proportion. Check it's legs. you don't want a horse "back of the knee" which means it's front legs (from shoulder to ankle) look like a "C". They shouldn't be exactly straight either, just slightly the other way like a back to front "C". It's hard to describe. Check for curbed hocks (the back knee) and ask if the horse has a clean vet cert and no vices.

during the sales, the next 15/20 lots will walk around a parade ring and people will be calling them out to do the above. it's your last chance to see them before they go in. Pull a couple of good lookers out or join in with the lads who are looking at them already. the clear etiquette is that the lad that pulled them out asks the questions (i.e. if they want the horse ot stand, it stands, or trot). once they are finished you can ask them to trot again if you missed something. Then go in and see how the horse sells. Put a price in your head and see how you get on. Check out whose bidding.

Enjoy it. Long day but really good fun.

And while we're loosely on the topic, anybody here going up to the Derby sales this coming week (apart from Nulty and Cantoris who've already said they're going!)?

If you click on Private Messages, which should be just under your username on the right hand corner of your screen, you'll be taken to the PM page. On the left hand side roughly half way down there's a heading that says 'Settings and Options'. In that menu there's an option that says 'Edit Signature'. Click on it and the page you're brought to allows you to draw up a signature which will appear underneath each post you've made/you'll make.

Just remember that there are guidelines regarding signatures and what can/can't be included. They can be found here.
