Laptop wont start

The battery in my laptop had to be removed a while back and I have been using the laptop solely off the mains.

In the last week when I press the power button on the laptop the fan starts for a second and dies and the lcd indicator shows that power is there but only for a second. Repeated pushing of power button will result in fan spinning but the laptop does not start.

Is the laptop done for or can it be fixed easily?

    Thanks.

Take your battery out, plug in your ac adapter, and then try and turn it on. Are there any lights come up or still nothing? It might be faulty motherboard or something with the power circuits, but in 80% motherboard.

Just tried this. The lights at the side come and then off but the power light stays on. I can hear the fan for a few seconds and it sounds like something is working inside, not sure what though.
