Noticed this is Tesco Waterford and Tramore last couple of days:

    eMachines 14.1 inch laptop €247

    and

Compaq AQ110C netbook (usual spec thingy 10 in screen etc) €232

Spec on both is much the same (except the laptop has bigger screen, obviously)

Not a half-price deal or anything but not bad.

    The laptop is this one.
D620. Well that's basing it on the last page of this thread.

Emachines. Janey Mac. I had one of them from 2002 - 2007. Brilliant machine. MB got fried in an electrical storm. Couldn't get any at the time. Bought a Dell.:(

Decent specs for that price but that lack of HDMI cable and 1GB RAM would put me off. Good laptop to buy though if you're tight on cash and need it for basic browsing and shtuff.

A word of warning though if you plan any gaming on the laptop. The graphics card is very basic and spec'd with Shader Model 2.0 - many new games now will not run on a low end card like this and require Shader 3.0 to run. So if you are planning any serious gaming, then this may not be for you.

Word of caution on the netbook too. Battery life is a miserly 2 hours.

    The cost of a 6 cell battery €100 (misco.ie)

Maybe cheaper batteries elsewhere but that would bump the price up to Samsung 6/9 cell territory.

How? I mean did a bolt of lightening hit your laptop outside?

If lightening hit outside pole trip switches / fuses would blow before it reached your laptop. Even if they didn't your laptop adaptor would probably fry before causing any damage to your laptop.

Most lightening strikes come down the phone line and fry the modem, desktops are ok cause the modem isn't usually part of the MB, laptops not as lucky. I used to go around Ennis replacing modems in the information age town machines, 100s were fried cause of a lightening strike

A lot of laptops also have a modem module which connects to motherboard. I'm surprised that anyone would still be using dialup. But this is Ireland.
Suppose it wasnt that long ago, I remember how excited I was at the propsect of 56k modem :) massively faster than 33.6 ...

Correction. This will most certainly not be for anybody wanting to game. Seriously if gaming of anything beyond 4 year old games is what you want. Save more cash, this will just disappoint.

Quick question (from one who hasn't a fiddler's about technology)-

I have absolutely zero interest in gaming, just need a laptop for basic browsing, using with a data projector at work and for storing music/photos (I'm aware I can get an external hard drive if the memory is crap)

so....... would this computer ye're speaking of be of any use to me? I'm stoney broke at the moment and this sounds like something I could stretch to!

Thanks... and sorry for sounding like a complete ditz, I really don't have a clue! :o

i work in a pc repair shop and the amount of these particular e-machines we have got in is unbelievable (theres a local tesco nearby).Hard Drive failure is the most common and the touch pad is another problem.Customers have said that tesco are a nightmare to deal with, and they actually rathered us repairing them than waiting up to 6 weeks for tesco's to replace it. Also these are only 1gb of ram which is painfully slow for running vista
